DON'T EVER WORK FOR...

I wrote this (and included pictures) on my www.mysa.com blog and am reposting it here for discussion.

As of recently, I have found myself looking for my next radio job. Needless to say, I am remembering how unpleasant it is.

My first radio company I had ever worked for was Infinity Broadcasting back in 2000. I remember the more experienced radio folks telling me horror stories such as "DON'T EVER WORK FOR CLEAR CHANNEL!" That would normally be followed up with a (at least) 10 minute rant how they would sacrifice goats in the hallways and the sales department would snatch deadbeat clients first born children if they didn't pay up, etc.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic.

Basically they would exaggerate the "horror" of working for such a company. This was my first experience with this sort of thing. It never fails, every radio person finds themselves one day listening to someone's DON'T EVER WORK FOR (Insert Company) stories. Disgruntled ex employee, or truth?? That is the question.

Eventually I ended up working for Clear Channel. When I first started I remembered the horror stories of former employees. I saw no remnants of devil worshiping. I saw no one resorting to cannibalism due to weak sales or ratings.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic AGAIN.

In fact, Clear Channel was very good to me the three and half years I was employed there.

I guess my rant is this...

It has been my assessment that no matter what radio company (if at all) I will work for in the future, there will always be people who have these so called "horror stories" about them.

What exactly is the point of them? In my situation all those warnings were false.

What were some of the horror stories you heard about? And did you work for that company you were warned about? Was it like they said? Or was it different?

Do you want to share some of your "DO NOT WORK FOR" rants?

I have friends in TV who are being forced to take pay cuts and unpaid furloughs in lieu of layoffs.

Jeanne Jakle's column hardly goes a month anymore without news of job cuts at some local media outlet.

Forget individual companies... if you read The Media is Dying for a while, you begin to understand that this is not the time to go to work for any media company. :'(

** Waits for someone to say.... "(Insert Company) Hates puppies!" **

A person's gotta work.
Make your deal going in.
Get it in writing.
Don't be the highest paid in your job classification.
Be nice to everybody.
Don't be surprised if they come up with bogus grounds to break your contract;
Then shake the dust from your sandals and move on to the next situation.
