I had the chance to speak with the late great Diamond Jim Nettleton IMHO one of the best PDs ever in early 2000. He is the one responsible for launching all the floundering CBS owned FM outlets into Solid Gold Radio outlets after the success of proto type WCAU-FM, he told me if the GM Jim Keating did not panic and flip to disco they would of still been around playing oldies like WCBS-FM until the 2000's, the audience was there, what do you thinh.....
 
That "loyal audience" had become so old that even local direct accounts did not buy on the station. A "loyal audience" that no advertisers want to reach means that a station has to change format.
