Doo-Wop Shows

Is the Philadelphia area the last big holdout for hearing doo-wop oldies on the radio on a regular basis? We still have 3 hours of Harvey Holiday's "Street Corner Sunday", WPEN plays doo-wop mixed in through the week, non-com WRDV plays it much of the weekend (including obscure recordings), plus some other shows on WNJC, WDVR, WVLT. There are a few nationally syndicated shows like Cool Bobby B's and Doo-Wop Express, but do any other markets hear much doo-wop music on oldies stations or block programmed elsewhere anymore? I think I saw that Lenny Coco of the Chimes ("Once in a While") has a show on a Long Island AM station, too. WSAI played a pretty good amount of it in the Real Oldies era.

Since 1990, Uncle Henry's Basement has aired on
WMWM in Salem, MA (a 130 watt station covering Boston's North Shore).
They have rotating hosts who bring in their own collection of music--usually
vinyl transferred to CD these days. No streamcasting yet but some people might tape it and mail it to friends/collectors.

The show airs Saturdays from 6-9 pm at 91.7, if you happen to be in the area.

Pittsburgh (and environs) are also one of the last doo-wop holdouts.

Sundays seem to be the best judge of just how big it is:

WJPA/Washington, PA (25 miles south of PGH)--
12pm-6pm Mon Valley Memories, including lots of doo wop and Pittsburgh classics (mostly vocal group harmony), plus some old R&B and soul (up to the late 60s); hosted by Jim Dudas (JD the DJ)
6pm-12am Crusin' Sunday Night, THE BEST oldies show in Pittsburgh area; more Pittsburgh memories, doo wop, vocal groups, "forgotten memories" (lots from vinyl), and a good dose of good old R&B and soul; 11pm is the "Parking Edition" with ballads and slower stuff; hosted by Gee Whiz George

WWSW/Pittsburgh (3WS)--
6pm-12am Sunday Night Oldies Diner, lots of Pittsburgh classics (local and national), with a healthy dose of doo wop; one criticism is that each week is pretty repetitive, including requests; hosted by R.D. Summers

WLSW/Scottdale, PA (about 35 miles SE of Pittsburgh)--
All weekend is oldies; signal is weak in Allegheny County; best word to describe DJs is "local flavor"; weeknights 7pm-12am is a Jukebox Show

WJAS/Pittsburgh--
6pm-12am Sunday Night Rock n Roll Oldies Party, AM doo wop and oldies (as nature intended), quick paced, witty DJ; dives relatively deep, but also has some of the expected stuff too; hosted by Doug Hoerth

WKFB/Jeannette, PA (35 miles east of Pittsburgh)--
Saturday 1pm-4pm Big Ray Edwards, daytimer AM; lots of classic doo wop and vocal harmony; again, "local flavor" (Big Ray also hosts weekday morning show on 770)
Saturday 4pm-8pm Frankie Day Radio Show, again "local flavor" but a pretty good playlist.
(In fact, all of Saturday--except 10am-1pm--is 50s and 60s oldies on 770 WKFB)

Alas...none of them stream.
Edited by Johnny Morgan on 06/15/05 04:05 PM.

There's still also "Little Walter's Time Machine", an excellent weekly 50's/early 60's Doo-Wop, R&B, Soul, Pop and Rock'n'Roll show syndicated among a few dozen stations nationwide. Walter is a lifelong collector and oldies reissue producer who maintains a manic pace, and digs deep as well as playing the hits that other stations no longer play.

Affilates air the show at different times. Walter's station list is here, though you'll have to check with the affilates for the day and time in your area.

In the Boston area, Walter can be heard north and northwest of the city on WBOQ 104.9 FM Beverly, MA Sundays 8 - 11 PM, and south and west of the city on WWBB 101.5 FM Providence, RI Sundays 9 PM - Midnight.

Unfortunately, neither station comes in well right in Boston proper due to distance and interference from other stations. Though Walter is a Boston institution and has been on about a dozen Boston stations in 37 years, there is no longer a station in Boston proper that wants to air 50's oldies.

Also, on Boston' South Shore, there's WATD 95.9 FM in Marshfield MA, an independent local commercial station which has a number of oldies shows that dip into the 50's on weekends, weeknight evenings, and weekday overnights. The most Doo-Wop in particular can be heard on "Bill Clark's Music Heaven" Sunday nights 10 PM - 2 AM.

WATD does come in (weakly) in Boston proper, and also streams on the web!

Doo Wop shows are fine for AMs and non-competitive FMs where there's no risk.

One of the reasons so many of your beloved Oldies stations are no longer in the format was the penchant for hanging on to Doo Wop and 50s music so long. Sorry.

Walters Time Machine is a good show. WSAI carried it before their format change. I wish Sirius Gold would pick up a show like that...their decade stations are like FM without commericals, its not even funny.

Chicago's Real Oldies WRLL programs Little Walter at 9 P.M. Sundays. They stream at www.realoldies1690.com

> Walters Time Machine is a good show.

I had the honor of working with him at defunct oldies station WMEX Boston (the second one at 1150 AM, not the original one at 1510) in the mid 80's. I followed him Saturday nights at midnight, and I always came in early to watch him in action.

Being a native Pittsburgher, I relish returning to the 'Burgh on weekends. Doo-Wop and greasy old soul records EVERYWHERE!! It's a smorgasboard of stuff you shouldn't play if you want ratings, and I love that they can get away with it. They play 'B' sides of records that didn't even have an 'A' side!!(LOL) A lot of those "Pittsburgh oldies" are the same tunes I played as a DJ at my high school dances circa 1969-'71, and they were OLD THEN!!
That stuff will have an audience in that town until the last yinzer has lost his pulse.

I have a bunch...still..on 45RPM. There was also a series of CD's on ITZY records a few years back. In fact, I even found one here in Dallas. "Pittsburgh's Greatest
Hits" I believe. I figure you could find them in the 'Burgh fairly easily. Try Record Hut(?) in Millvale. Also, Record-Rama in Etna, if they're still in business. You may have to settle for vinyl on some of that stuff. I have a friend in Pittsburgh who has all that stuff and may be willing to share. You also might call Jim Dudas at WJPA/Washington. His 'Mon Valley Memories' show airs there practically all day Sunday and he usually answers his request line. Tell him John 'Randall' told you to call. I was his PD at WESA in the mid 80's and that was my nom d'aire. I understood that he was 'hooked up with one of those music stores although that may be ancient history. If you still come up dry, e-mail me at KLUV in Dallas.

And The Marcels and the Del-Vikings. Outside of the New York, New Jersey area, I don't think there's another city whose residents love the Doo-Wop like Pittsburghers.

I guess we are in a state of six degrees of seperation. I too grew up in Pittsburgh spoon fed doo-wop on Porky Chadwick and Terry Lee. I danced at The White Elephant, Neece's and Savor's. Then I lived in Richmond Va. and remember you from Q94. Keep the faith! Jack and Diane will never die nor will Brenda and Eddie.

101.1 and 93.5 The Wave

Ken Held's Doo Wop Shop is on some AM station in South Florida. He used to host it on Majic 102.7, then moved to WAXY 790 around 2002. Now he is another station, so I was told.

I don't think anyone mentioned Cool Bobby B. He is on many stations including one in Las Vegas and his show is available for a week here.

Do you mean B-94? as Alfred E. Newman OR Q-94/Altoona?
I can't imagine it's the latter. I was there for about 5 minutes.
