"DOOL" Doomed?

Eventually all soap operas on TV will be cancelled. It costs the networks too much money to air these shows. Instead they will replace them with either local gab fests, or informercials.

Or Game Shows; CBS replaced Guiding Light with Let's Make a Deal and there's a possibility they will replace As The World Turns with a game show, possibly a new version of Pyramid. I would enjoy that a lot more then I would enjoy a talk show or infomercials, although some talk shows are entertaining.

It would be interesting to see if anyone out there knows the precise numbers on production costs for a game show vs. a soap opera. But I suspect it is quite substantial. The target audience for soaps seems to have vanished rapidly (most women 18-64 now working outside the home, college students having a zillion alternatives on the wireless internet, etc.) Many networks have proven unwilling to invest in drama production even in prime-time, conceding whole prime time blocks by running cheap to produce "TV's Funniest Security Camera Videos" and the like.

The one exception seems to be Spanish TV, where Telenovelas have a strong tradition.
