Doors Keyboardist Ray Manzerek Dies

Doors keyboardist Ray Manzerek died today

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/may/20/ray-manzarek-founding-member-doors-dies-74/

Ray of course hit the LA scene big with the Doors in the 60's and has been the main force keeping the Doors music alive ever since Jim Morrison's passing in 1971.

Expect the mother of all Doors blocks on the Jim Ladd show on SiriusXM. I'm sure The Sound will do something later tonight on either the 10 @ 10 or the 11:00 album side.

Is this a free plug for Jim Ladd and the Sound? :D

If you have followed my posts in the past, you would know it was mostly a shot at Jim Ladd, who needs no reason at all to spin Doors records as if they were the hottest thing in music today, instead of a band that died in the early 70s. You'll notice neither were on my list!

I guess it's appropriate that the news of Ray Manzarek's death should be posted in the Los Angeles forum. The Doors were from Los Angeles---something I bet hardly anybody knew!---and their first single, Break On Through, was a top-ten hit here. Nationally it stalled at #125 on Billboard's Bubbling Under chart. Their second record did much better. ;)

Re: Doors Keyboardist Ray Manzarek Dies

The Sound broke from its just-started A to Z at 2:45pm on Monday 5/20 to play a set of 10 Doors songs (list courtesy of TuneGenie + Mediabase):

Light My Fire - The Doors - 3:19pm
People Are Strange - The Doors - 3:17pm
Hello, I Love You - The Doors - 3:13pm
Love Me Two Times - The Doors - 3:10pm
Break On Through (To The Other Side) - The Doors - 3:05pm
Soul Kitchen - The Doors - 3:02pm
Back Door Man - The Doors - 2:58pm
Touch Me - The Doors - 2:55pm
Riders On the Storm - The Doors - 2:48pm
The Crystal Ship - The Doors - 2:45pm

Before the Doors set the A-Z had just played "American Woman" by Lenny Kravitz (at 2:34pm) preceded by the original version of the same song by the Guess Who.

Earlier on Mon. 5/20 by mere coincidence, in the regular A-Z rotation, this selection had appeared:
Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - The Doors - 11:50am (approximately 40 minutes before Ray passed away).

The A-Z picked up with Pure Prairie League's "Amie" at 3:33pm and hasn't broken since.

Steve,

As a 12 year old in 1967, I do not remember this, but on the KTLA channel 5 40th anniversary special from 1987, they showed a short clip of The Doors lip-synching their first single "Break On Through", on Casey Kasem's TV dance show "Shebang", which I think was on KTLA-5 back then.

Remember the Doors' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 17 1967? Bob Precht, the producer, asked Morrison to change the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" because it was supposedly---horrors!---a drug reference. Morrison agreed to change the line to "Girl, we couldn't get much better" but during the broadcast sang Light My Fire exactly as written and Sullivan was livid. Sullivan immediately dropped plans to have the Doors on the program again. Their first appearance was their last. I don't think they really cared.

(When the Rolling Stones were on the Sullivan show, Mick Jagger was forced to sing "Let's spend some time together" instead of "Let's spend the night together"---and he wasn't happy about it. When he shook hands with Sullivan, he said "Thank you, Ed" but his glare was quite telling!)

"And now, for all you kiddies out there, here are Gary Lewis & the Playboys! So c'mon, let's really hear it for 'em!" :D

Mick also rolled his eyes while singing the altered lyrics...
