Dori Munson--Does he pay for anything?

I used to be in broadcasting--I get that stations and talents need to be creative about bringing in revenue and making up for on the side what isn't in a contract....

But c'mon.....

As far as I'm concerned--Dori lost all credability with me a long time ago. On the air, he is an advocate for tight government spending. But--when it comes time for a break--he'll attached himself to ANYTHING.

As far as I can tell, Dori has probably not paid for: his dog fence, his windshield repair, his gutters, probably a car or two--the list goes on and on.

Perhaps others can add to this thread--what else have you heard Dori promote--with the basic understanding that he probably also got it for free?

Perks for air personalities

I've also been on the other end of the microphone. And often the products endorsed by the personality aren't their choice.

The scenario usually is the sales manager approaches the air talent and says they have a fat order from a client who wants live spots. Such spots are not only sold for a premium, but they have a built-in talent fee that the personality gets with every spot ... sometimes regardless of whether it's actually read live or "live on tape" in other dayparts. Depending on the station that fee could be $10 or $100. That's PER SPOT!

Now in order for the talent to speak knowledgably about that product - and perhaps adlib around the copy or "talking points" script - the sponsor will include some free product or an "informational" visit to their store/business. So when you hear Dori or others say, "I've met the people at (---) and saw their operation and it's great!" chances are they have actually been there and done that.

But it's not an endless free gravy train. Sometimes the sponsor will trade a finite portion of the talent fee for product. Because of "payola" regulations, now all that stuff has to be accounted for and disclosed.

That's not to say that Dori might not get the occasional free meal from a restaurant because he's a "celeb" ... when I did morning radio I was the king of my local Subway Sandwiches shop. He never let me pay for anything. And I got a slew of free coupons for various things from the sales department's trade stash if I spend some extra time doing a spec spot or chatting up a prospect.

But you want to talk about credibility? Listen to any of the syndicated talkers. Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Paul Harvey, Dr. Laura ... you name it! Most all of them do endorsement spots for Bose Wave Radios, Temperpedic Mattresses, Vermont Teddy Bears and other companies who believe their message carries more credibility delivered by a personality who already has an established "relationship" with the listener.

Re: Perks for air personalities

I happened to listen to DM the day the Jackson verdict came down (put radio on scan to see who was covering it, etc.). After a brief CBS news interlude, it was back to Dori's talk ... and I felt like I was driving by an accident and had to gawk. He kept telling callers "Jackson is a Pedophilia" --- causing me to scream at the radio every single time "the WORD is PEDOPHILE you stupid $*$%$#)#$#$#". Was horrified at the way he kept making really stupid jokes and then quickly supplying his own laugh track.

So if he's doing endorsements ... any chance he might use some of the proceeds to buy a dictionary?

I think the part that upsets me is if he weren't on ... very likely someone else with equal or lesser talent might step in and fill "the void's void".

Don't forget how he advertises that he and his entire family have Cingular phones. I'm sure those are free.

I used to love Dori, but he's gotten too big for his britches.

You'd think J.P. Patches, Stan Boreson, Susan Hutchinson, Pat O'Day and Gary Lockwood
NEVER recieved, nor are STILL recieving - any 'perks' from being famous ON-AIR?

What crusted and dusty storybooks did YOU fall out of?....

The goodies will never stop: under the table, behind the table...wherever!!

To those MAD about it, keep closing your eyes...really - nobody CAN see you....

Large market air talent usually can turn down endorsements that might adversely affect public image. Usually in the contract.

Re: Perks for air personalities

Huh? They might be able to make somebody read ad copy, but you are saying that there are stations out there forcing air talent to do personal endorsements? How can they force somebody to put their name on a product they do not wish to endorse? Seems to me that would cross some legal lines on several levels?

Man that would totally blow to be in that situation.

He's not kidding. He likes to troll threads just because unemployment isn't interesting enough.

Re: Perks for Radio/TV Personalities

Chris Wedes aka J.P. Patches is very much alive and still making public appearances. I know the man personally and he is going strong.
