OK, for a while now I have been reading too many posts about how "bad, Lousy, Awful, Downright Horrible" that Market #192 (?) is, for quite some time now. Now this post might get to be a little long winded, but you know what? Who cares, I'm gonna say it anyway.
To tell the truth, I used to enjoy posting on this board, but recently, I just come here for the laughs.
Now it's just a bunch of people with angst, apathy, and "woe is me", "you suck", garbage that for some reason they think is relevant. Yeah, this blog is for airing grievances, and such, but I am getting downright tired of the constant griping and doom-saying that goes on here.
I have been blessed to work in Dothan radio for almost 7 years, and Good Lord willing I will continue to do so.
I have been privileged to get to know and make friends with personalities from every station in the market, and I can humbly say that each one of those folks, whether they be on air personalities, sales people, General Managers and what not, they have one goal in mind: To do their best to make Dothan radio and their stations the one people want to listen to. Dothan has great radio. Great stations, great personalities. I have yet to meet a single fellow personality that I did not want to see again. We all want to succeed. We all have a very special job that places us in the 1% in this market.
Now on the outside looking in, it may seem that these said people may not be doing what YOU want, because there a multitude of things that happen behind the scenes that can hinder a station from succeeding. No station, no matter how backward YOU may think they are, is in this to fail. No idiot in his right mind starts a station just to run it in the ground. No station wants to fire people. No station wants to lose money, and have to close the doors. Sure, there are times when the supervisors seem to be so hard headed and the decisions they make may look mindless, but these people are wanting to get paid also. We all say we have "love for Radio". Bull. It's that we love getting a paycheck.
I am so happy to get paid for what I am doing. Am I the best at what I do? Hell no. But I give my best every time I step into the on air studio, or into the production studio. Just like everyone else in our business. I can't stand it when someone says their station is doomed to fail because of the people who run it. I'm not going to say it's wrong to post what you think, but it gets old after a while, if all it seems to be is sour grapes. Trying to assuage your ego and feelings with constant criticism is no way to make a point. If you know you can't change things, why try? What demon is constantly trying to get out, when all you do is lob grenades at other?
We don't get in this business to fail. We want to succeed. We want to make a difference. Sometimes it doesn't work. That is the nature of business. If one thing doesn't, work you try another. But never think that we do this to fail. And from the outside, it seems just the opposite.
I'm not trying to tell you to not post your thoughts. Do so, but know that 9 times out of 10 we are not listening to you. Short, blunt and to the point.
At this point, I thank YOU for reading up to this point. Yeah, I'm rambling on a bit, so to take a different path, here is my resolutions for 2010:
1. To continue to thank all my listeners who take time out of their busy day to listen in.
2. To continue to thank all my listeners who take time to call the request lines and say hello.
3. To give my listeners the best I can do on air, even if it's making mistakes. (move forward Son, move
forward)
4. To create and produce the best commercials, and give the advertiser the best that their money
can buy.
5. To continue to work with the sales staff, help them write great copy, and make them look good when
they return to the advertiser for more airtime.
6. Most of all, to get to know my fellow on air personalities better, and even thought we
may have disagreements, and make the best radio possible. I invite you to do the same.
