Double flip NH seacoast

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/netgnomes/70725/double-flip-on-new-hampshire-seacoast/

>>Hot AC 107.1 WERZ flipped to CHR at 3:00pm and returned to its heritage “Z107” branding. The move brings the programming heard on sister “Kiss 95.3” WSKX over to the stronger WERZ signal..
WSKX has begun stunting with sounds of ocean waves and lighthouse bells while teasing a new format will launch Tuesday, October 9 at 12:00pm. We’re expecting an AC format to appear on 95.3 as Clear Channel has registered 953TheCoast.com for the station.

I hope 95.3 The Coast is a decoy and not the real name. Nearby Portland has Coast 93.1 (WMGX owned by Saga). I would expect them to complain! It would be like WSNE in Providence when it changed to Star 93.3 for only a month due to Star 93.7 on the air in Boston!

Does this make any sense? Clear Channel owns both 95.3 and 107.1 in the Portsmouth market. Both signals are roughly the same strength, Class A's. 95.3 was Top 40, 107.1 was Hot AC.

So you move Top 40 from 95.3 to 107.1. And then you're going to premiere a new AC format on 95.3? Why not leave Top 40 on 95.3 and just make 107.1 a little less hot?

Let's also remember Clear Channel also owns 107.9 WXKS-FM, Boston's #1 station. 107.1's signal overlaps more with WXKS-FM's signal, meaning you have two Clear Channel Top 40 stations in Seabrook, Plaistow, Newburyport, Haverill, etc. 95.3's signal covers Sanford, Biddeford and Rochester better, with less overlap with WXKS-FM.

And why discontinue Matt Siegal's morning show, done from Boston, airing in the Portsmouth market on 95.3 and replace him on 107.1 with Elvis Duran, who does his morning show from New York? (Or actually a studio in New Jersey.) Clear Channel is so high on Matt Siegal, usually #1 in mornings in Boston, that they named their new Boston All-Comedy station "Matty's Comedy 1200," even though he really has nothing to do with it except for a few recorded announcements. But then they yank him from the Portsmouth market?

Doesn't make much sense.

The market already has "98.7 The Bay". Wouldn't "95.3 The Coast" just muddy the waters, so to speak? Won't listeners confuse two AC stations using such similar slogans? This isn't a PPM market.

Maybe "The Coast" won't be AC but more like "The Harbor", CC's new station on 101.7 in Boston that plays everything. The market is saturated with ACs (98.7 WBYY, 95.7 WZID, 94.9 WHOM).

Kiss 95.3 was already a rhythmic leaning CHR so I doubt it would move that way, more rhythmic. I'm thinking that with the ocean sounds that it's stunting with now, it would do something like the Harbor, play everything. That format wouldn't cannibalize CC's other sister stations in the market.

Not likely. The Portsmouth-York County ME area is one of the whitest markets in America. Boston has no Urban station so Jamn 945 serves as both a Rhythmic station and an Urban. Same with WZMX Hartford. I doubt you'd hear such a station in Northern New England.

But again, I just don't understand the logic. Take WERZ from Top 40 to Hot AC a few years ago. Put Top 40 on 95.3. Then end Top 40 on 95.3 and put it back on WERZ, whose signal overlaps with WXKS-FM. Huh?

The weather may not have helped, but 107.1 had a good bit of static in it in Wells today. It was noticeable but maybe not turn-off-able. Probably clear up to exit 7.

The switch makes sense looking at the radio-locator map. The although WXKS overlaps with 107.1 officially, that is not as far as the "strong Reception" circles are concerned. The new setup gives a strong signal all the way from south of Boston to York without any gaps. Anyone north of York will probably start moving to Hot 104.7, however that isn't the best reception until you hit the Wells exit. There is a top-40 "static" zone from York to Wells.

As for 95.3, I hope for "the Harbor" over "the Coast". The area is lousy with AC.

I think Clear Channel is hoping for name recognition to regain the audience WERZ used to have back in its heyday when it was a CHR and did well for ratings. It was big in the seacoast way back when, but that audience now is beyond the target demo a CHR would go after today.

I agree with the overlap with Kiss 108's signal it's perplexing to change WERZ again, and get rid of Matty in this market. My guess is Matty simply isn't the big hit up here as he is in Boston. He was on 95.3 prior to 2010 and they switched him to WERZ in favor of Elvis Duran.

Well there is always Q 97-dot-9.

I think 95.3 is going to flip to a variety hit's format similar to The Harbor as I saw a post on Facebook telling a listener that they will be back Tuesday (today) at noon and they are going to be playing "everything".

How long until the C&D from Saga?

Not long.

While it lasts, I do admire the nautical theme of the cluster, between 96.7 The Wave and 95.3 The Coast. Perhaps it could become The Shore?
