Double-teaming in Cox Atlanta radio PD land

· L. Cagle has been named program director of WSB-FM B98.5FM, effective immediately. He will continue in his role of program director for WBTS-FM 95.5 The BEAT as well.

· Jay Dixon has been named the new program director of WSRV-FM 97.1FM The River, effective immediately. He will continue in his role of program director for WALR-FM KISS 104.1 as well.

Thoughts?

Should either Cagle or Dixon not perform properly, does one of them get to run all four stations? I'm sure it will come to that eventually, anyway.

Wouldn't it seem more logical to have one person over B98.5 and The River, and the other person over Kiss and The Beat?

Think about it. They have Bob Neil heavily involved in programming, and then they have Tony Kidd over the programming of all 4 stations. You could hire Sarah Palin or Michael Vick, and I doubt you'd notice one thing different about how any of the stations sound from the way they do now.

Tony is THE MAN in Atlanta-meaning he's earned the trust vote to handle the other properties. The PD post at The River and B98.5 is mechanical at best. It's not like either station requires out-of-the-box creative leadership. My bet is one of the Cox signals flips to FM talk soon.

It's logical but not practical; since Cagle was already BTS PD and Kidd was already ALR PD, it makes sense that they'd stick with it.

95.5 The Beat doesn't even sound like they have a PD. The same songs played 50 times a week with jocks reading liners for beat the buzzer. Who will program Power 100.1 in Athens? I see they already have a 95.5 jock.

Why would Cox flip any of their successful FM properties to a Talk simulcast?

The shared programming duties seem a bit off to me - a rhythmic guy programming an AC? - but I'm sure Cagle and Dixon are both capable of handling other formats... especially since they've got other executives hovering over their shoulders, as Roddy mentioned. And the cost benefits to Cox go without saying.

Kevin Steele is listed on Power 100.1's website as PD. I think they're actually sounding fairly decent. Could be a smidge more aggressive on new music, but we know that's a company-wide issue. They're a solid alternative when the Atlanta CHRs are fuzzy or I need some pop/rhythmic material.

This is an odd paring. But during the 97.1 Jamz era...B98.5 and the Beat shared a GM, while Jamz and Kiss shared one as well (WSB-AM had a standalone GM).

Unless Cox is planning something major...this is odd. All of the stations are top performers, so I don't forsee a flip. The River and Kiss are old school, so that pairing is less odd. Unless B98.5 is going into a more currents direction (which I hope happens)...I don't get it.

Since Bob now has TV and newspaper duties as well...He has less control. A guy in Orlando (unless he has relocated to Atlanta) is now calling the shots.

This could be a precursor to the end of the 300-song limited selection jukebox Bob Neil was famous for. This may just be another act of odd Cox management layers. Only time will tell.

I see no reason for Cox to program talk on FM given WSB-AM's dominance. It would hurt WSB and erase one of the profitable music FM's. If a competitor put talk on a major FM signal, things would be different.

Who's that?

PLEASE! If I hear "Dream On" on The River one more time or B98.5 continues to add "currents" at the whopping rate of two every six months, I will lose it.

Imagine my disappointment when I saw the subject of the thread and realized it had nothing to do with Jordan Graye, Kate McCarthy and a Cox PD.

That would be Rich Reis, Cox Regional VP. The Cox stations in Atlanta have no GM so I guess he fills that role.

That's the theme of my latest Letter to Penthouse.
