Double the Regonal Mexican? No?

I have a question about the Houston radio dial. Recently, KPTY flipped from “Party” to a regional Mexican format. However, doesn’t the same company own a regional Mexican station in Houston at 102.9?

Please correct me if I’m wrong here.

93.3 is pure music, while 102.9 has a personality lineup with little music in the principal dayparts.

That would be David's way of saying "Yes they do, yes they are, yes we know." Odd, isn't it? Party couldn't compete with The Box because of its limited signals, both at 104.9 and most recently at 93.3. So, what do they do? Compete against themselves and pull ratings away from their traditionally #1 property in the market. Hey, if it works for them, so be it. Univision had a great thing going with Party, giving them the opportunity to cater to demos not traditionally targetted by Univision. They gave up on the station, moved it to Port Arthur and eventually killed it after 10 years at 3 different dial positions. It really is a shame, because if you like the genre of Hip-Hop, Univision had The Box beaten 9 ways to Sunday with the music.

Not odd. Each caters to a different audience segment.

David,

I’ve read a lot of you’re posts, and you seem to have a lot of knowledge about Spanish language radio in the US. As I don’t listen to Spanish language radio, I’m not that familiar with it. Can you please explain what you meant when you said that both stations target a different audience segment? Do 93.3 and 102.9 play different types of Regional Mexican? Pardon the insensitive question, but, are there different types of Regional Mexican? Or, as you suggested earlier, 93.3 is all music, and 102.9 is more personality driven. Does that mean that, by day, 102.9 airs talk shows? I ask because I’m trying to understand the difference between the 2 stations, and, perhaps, maybe learn something new about Spanish Language radio as well.

Both. There are flavors or blends of regional Mexican. In fact, the music on KOVE is also regional Mexican.

But the real difference between 93.3 is that it is "more music" while the morning and afternoon shows on KLTN only play a couple of songs an hour.

wait wait wait a minute...KLTN new lineup has NOT even started...give it a few days
how can we comment on something not even on the air
we are talking about a station with a new mid day show which will be unique or whatever you want to say about it
and the 2 songs per hour...im got a different message about songs played per hour..more like 3 times more

i am seeing Norteno go that way Tejano did...less and less play and soon may be forgotten...in addition to Piolin and Pistolero play even less Norteno than Raul
Local Houston Regional Music will now start at 7pm...wtf

Completely off topic... but I'd be interested in seeing some sort of "transitional" format. Regional Mexican in some sort of blend to American pop.

Totally crazy idea, but I can see the family jammin' some Britney Spears. :)

American pop? Since when did America pop sound like polka music?

btw I would rather listen to a crowd of screatching cats and fingernails scratching chalk boards than Brittney Spears.

Throughout Latin America, CHR, AC and rock stations mix product in English with product in Spanish routinely. And there are also stations that play nothing but English language product. But you won't hear whatever the local form of country (Regional Mexican in Mexico....) mixed with English cuts any more than you will hear AC/DC on a Country station in the US... it's a different listener group.

From 5 AM to 10 AM today, KLTN played 4 songs.... that is what I was referring to.

glad you prove my point...less music even less of norteno. i hope the changes are good for KLTN because if its not....then like Homer Simpson said..."Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try." hahaha

But that is less than one song an hour average!
