Doug Fleming 1977-2005

Doug wrote or responded to my post one time where he agreed with me on an issue. He thanked me one time for posting it.
By his background he seemed to be a very successful human being. The shocking thing was his age that he passed away. And the most shocking was I never knew he was in poor health. Or was he? 28?.
A few people mentioned he was missing. (foul play). But know mention of the story. What was the exact reason?
To everyone on this board, it doesn't matter how much rich and successful you are, what kind of car you drive, or how high your ratings are....without your health, your nothing.

This is very sad indeed. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this difficult time.

1. Two questions. Will this effect the future of Radio-info.com . Will the site continue on?

2. Can someone find the very last post from Doug and link to it. I would like to hear the last words that Doug was able to speak to us.

I was shocked when I learned the news earlier this week. My business partner Rob and I had just had dinner with him not even two weeks ago here in Chicago. We had been speaking back and forth with him until he went missing. I am feeling a massive combination of shock, disbelief, sadness, anger, grief, and frustration that a good man and good friend has passed away.

My thanks to Bill (WYTZZ95FM), Lance, Sam, and Tanim, for everything they have done to handle this tragedy and everything they have done for Radio-Info. Doug was extremely proud of how Radio-Info.com has grown since its humble beginnings, and he still had SO MUCH in store for the site.

This is probably the most difficult message board posting I have ever made. So many people has expressed that they want to know more about Doug. Doug and I had chatted on the phone, email, and in message boards (including Zecom Communications' notorious CROW board and Cyber Radio's message board) before I finally met him face-to-face in 1997. I was working for Cyber Radio 92.7 and Doug came to the studios for a visit. Doug had always been an avid fan and supporter of dance radio.

Since then, Doug and I have been friends who shared common interests in a wider range than just dance music and radio broadcasting. Whenever there was a format or ownership change, I could expect a phone call or email from him discussing it. Whenever he came across a unique jingle or acquired a new aircheck of a format change, he was eager to share it with me.

We have gone tower-chasing all over the south and western suburbs together with my business partner Rob. Doug was a gracious host when he showed me and my wife around San Francisco and the massive antenna tree on the mountain just outside the city. Of course, we ended that night laughing over an awesome Italian dinner in the city.

Doug grew up in Chicago listening to stations like Z95, Energy 88.7, B96, and WJMK. In addition to Radio-Info.com, Doug had written columns for DMA (Dance Music Authority) magazine discussing dance radio. He had served as a valuable member on JamTraxx Media's executive team during its humble beginnings. Together, we developed seriously-ambitious proposals and presentations for companies such as ABC Radio and Infinity Broadcasting. I knew that I could always rely on his financial knowledge that he accumulated from his experiences through IN3 Partners and his brief time at JPMorgan.

From the very beginning, I was simply amazed at the knowledge and passion he had for radio broadcasting. He gave his opinions and spoke with great articulation and knowledge that commanded respect from me and the radio executives that we had dealings with.

Due to our hectic schedules and our necessary business discussions, I deeply regret not talking to Doug on a personal level and just joke around as often as I would like. He and I had so much in common: we both worked hard to build and develop our own companies without relying on our families for financial support. We shared an appreciation for culture, traveling, aviation, and technology.

I will miss our inside jokes. I will miss his enthusiastic opinions on radio. I will miss his valuable knowledge about radio acquisitions and mergers. And I will miss him greatly.

He was extremely proud of this site, and I am sure that he would have liked to express his deepest thanks to every single one of you for your contributions to Radio-Info. I'll try to post some of his pictures in the future.

I am so shocked and saddened by this. Me and Doug have done some trading and was discussing another trade in the near future. When we did our first trade, which was a significant trade for me, he sent me a long e-mail,(which I still have), telling me about the history of the station that I requested. He also told me a great deal about him. We also had our "debates" on these message boards, but all and all, he was an incredible individual. R.I.P. my friend...
 
I am guessing that I knew Doug longer than most (or possibly all) people posting on or simply reading this site. One night, during my freshman year of college (1995-96), I was surfing the Web (when it was still such a new concept to most people), probably searching for information on either B-96 (WBBM-FM Chicago) or Power 92 (KKFR Glendale/Phoenix) -- two of my favorite radio stations at the time. I came across a mini radio station database that Doug had put on his personal Web space at his college. I e-mailed him stating how much I loved B-96 and/or Power 92, and he responded...and so our friendship began.

I was at the University of Michigan at the time. Doug got me all excited when he told me of rumors that Hot AC KVRY "Variety 104.7" in my hometown of Phoenix would flip to Mainstream CHR...especially since this was going to happen over Spring Break, and since I was going to be coming home for Spring Break, which meant that I'd be able to listen to and record the format change. And that's exactly what I did -- Nationwide Communications brought back the KZZP calls to 104.7 FM, although the format was Modern AC (one of the first in the country, if I remember correctly) and not Mainstream CHR.

A few weeks later, I'd made up my mind that I was going to transfer home and attend Arizona State starting the following semester. So I was pretty excited when Doug told me about the next rumor: KBZR (103.9 FM) in Coolidge, AZ was making plans to move its transmitter closer to Phoenix ("movin' in from the desert", as one of their liners stated), and switch to a Dance format. The station began stunting, even before I came home for the summer and Doug told me all about it. KBZR ended up stunting for 6 months and launched with a hip-hop/R&B/old school-intensive Rhythmic CHR format. But it was so much fun talking to Doug about it.

Doug became my best friend throughout most of my college years. We traded so many airchecks and discussed so much radio over the years. And it wasn't until 2001 or 2002 that I had the opportunity to meet Doug, while he was visiting Phoenix. We decided to take a roadtrip to Yuma, AZ (quite a hike from Phoenix) just so that we could try to aircheck strong-signalled radio stations from Mexico that (surprise surprise) played dance music.

After I started working full-time (in 2002), I found myself overwhelmed by trying to balance work with moderating the message boards on this site. My passion for radio was also beginning to dwindle. I just had different priorities and interests. I stepped down as adminstrator & moderator in late 2002. And, unfortunately, Doug and I didn't contact each other as much as we had before.

Still, Doug and I had a lengthy (as usual) conversation a few weeks ago, and we even engaged in an aircheck exchange, which we hadn't done in years.

His final two e-mails to me were sent on July 3rd...they contained links to a couple of online radio stations that he felt I would enjoy. I just opened and re-read one of those e-mails, and now tears are filling my eyes.

I cannot believe that he is gone.

Doug, I know you are reading this from a better place. I am so very sorry that we didn't keep in touch as much as we should have these past few years. Thank you so much for being such a great friend and for keeping Radio-Info.com afloat for so many years.

And as hard as it was for you to write WYTZ, it was just as hard for me to read this very shocking news :......(

My memories of Doug were nothing BUT positive. I knew him from 1993 when I ran the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition and he along with Tanim and Bill were on the AOL MMC Radio Professional Boards. Even though we were in different markets, we all had the same passion for radio and dance music. When that board dropped off and Radio-Info started, I went right over!

The last time I've contacted Doug was about two months ago when I couldn't get back onto the board..some password messup. But without question he was VERY helpful in getting me back on the board.

My condolences to his family and friends. Doug was definitely an amazing guy...MUCH TOO YOUNG.

Yet even though he left us too soon, he did leave a legacy....THIS BOARD. He did unite music fans and fans of radio together. He gave us an outlet to speak our minds about the industry and allowed different thoughts and perspectives to be heard. Even if he might not have agreed with your viewpoint, he allowed it to be posted. With that, I have much RESPECT.

Doug is now in a better place. And we are all better people to have known him, even if we only "knew" him on the board and never met in person. No question we are all touched by him in one way or another.

But without question...he will be missed.

P.S. A sad irony...we've now lost TWO people who made an enormous impact regarding radio and realizing the potential of the Internet as a place to talk about it. Both men left us TOO SOON, as Bill Pfeiffer (rec.radio.broadcasting) passed at such an early age himself a couple of years back.

From His Bio that was posted above, he lived a rich (in life experences) and exciting life. I never met him but have read many of his posts..As was said, A shame to loose someone so quick in Life...

But I have been on here for 2 years and his work (as well as the others) has become like Cheers the bar for me, a place to sit back and shoot the hay about our love of radio and I hope everyone attached to here keeps this thing a going as a way to discuss his love and to honor his memory

As has been expressed many times in the posts below, I too am saddened to read about the passing of Doug Fleming. Although I never met Mr. Fleming, I have always appreciated the professional manner in which this board is managed and maintained. It has always been easy to see that it is a labour of love. Unfortunately, it is only now that I know who was behind it.

Reading about Doug's background and acheivements makes me feel quite sad for the life that was lost - and for never having had the priviledge of meeting him. By all accounts, he seemed to be a very intelligent and talented individual.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Doug's family and his many good friends. And, my gratitude to the Admins out there who are keeping this board going during such a tough period. I'm sure that he appreciates that very much.

I'm very sorry to have heard this terrible news! Although I've never exchanged e-mails with Doug myself, I have been very impressed with the hard work that he has done with the R-I site over the years as it has grown from just a handful of boards from just a short five years ago to what it is now.

Please accept my sincerest condolences.
