Low Tide

I posted this to all of the moderators last night. Now that I've had the time to absorb everything that has happened in the past few days, I feel ready to share it with all of you. This is the basic story of how Radio-Info came about.

Back in 1996, I was a naive 17-year old college freshman really discovering the internet for the first time. Over that year, I built The Mid-Atlantic Radio Page, into a directory focusing on radio in the area in and between New York City and Washington, D.C. The following year, The Mid-Atlantic Radio Board was launched as the first regional radio discussion board on the web. Before it there was only national newsgroups like rec.radio.broadcasting, e-mail lists like bostonradio.org, and believe it or not the trashfest even then known as All-Access Net Talk.

Via the site and board I began communicating with a number of fellow radiogeeks like myself. In fact, my Mid-Atlantic board was soon followed by a few sister boards for other markets including Tanim's Valley of The Sun Media covering Phoenix, and JMGomez' "Coast To Coast, Country to Country, Radio & TV Discussion Board", the latter would eventually become what is now the "National Radio" board here on Radio-Info. However, the site that hosted the boards, insidetheweb.com, used what was quickly becoming an inferior script, as we couldn't ban a few posters who were going out of their way to attempt to shut down the board.

Enter Doug Fleming. I had known who Doug was for awhile, even traded airchecks with him once or twice. Tanim, who had become good friends with both of us individually, suggested we all team up. Doug had two things that neither Tanim nor I had. A webserver that could handle a few discussion boards and a domain name: Radio-Info.com.

Doug had always envisioned building an online radio trade publication, "Hit Radio Online". He could name just about any CHR in the world and tell you what they sounded like. But he also loved the idea of having a network of forums for others like ourselves to share our passion for the medium and industry.

Doug was always working on what seemed like 10,000 projects at one time. In 1999, he joined J.P. Morgan as one of their primary investment bankers focusing on the media deals that seemed to be occuring then at an astonishing rate. By the age of 25, he was running his own investment firm. I truly believe that if he was 10 years older, it would be he, alongside Randy Michaels and Mel Karmazin as the top radio executives of the 90's consolidation era.

Yet throughout this there was always only one property of his that was not turning a profit, Radio-Info.com.

Radio-Info has always been about our passion for the medium. There's been many planned attempts to at least generate enough revenue to have the site fund itself and give back a little to everyone involved in keeping it running. Doug's business colleaugues were always telling him to dump the site as it was never going to be a good business. Before Sam joined us, there were times when Tanim, Doug, and I would spend our entire weekends attempting to tweak and adjust the code on the boards to prevent or repair crashes.

When we sold the site to Zeo last year, it was one of the toughest decisions he ever made. He thought he didn't have the time to dedicate to it anymore and wanted to see it reach its complete potential. There were other bidders that offered more money, but they all wanted to either shut it down, merge it into their own site, or wouldn't agree to keep me on to run it. All of those were dealbreakers to Doug.

When he thought that Zeo was running the site into the ground, Doug did everything he could to get the site back, and he did. He never gave up on Radio-Info. Just last week he was finalizing a deal to get us a new server to handle the ever increasing load. In fact he called me late Friday night to tell me the deal was just about done. I was one of the last people to speak to him and it was because of Radio-Info.

There have been many times over the past few years I thought the Radio-Info project was for naught. Doug understood when over the past two years or so, I would occasionally dissappear for a couple weeks at a time due to burnout. He never gave up on Radio-Info though. He never had the time to focus on the site's day to day operations, but when he needed to get involved in any potential legal issue there was never a time he didn't agree with whatever decision Tanim, Sam, or I may have made.

Yet for all the time we had known each other, Doug and I had never met face to face until last October. In order to make it happen I postponed my vacation plans by a day and he rescheduled a portion of a business trip. In retrospect, the two hours we spent at a diner in Bordentown, NJ were well worth it.

The last day or so I have been reminded of our normally lengthy conversations, where we'd touch upon things varied as format change rumors, what highways have the best/worst paving jobs, weather, and the fact that it seems that most radiogeeks seem to also be roadgeeks and weathergeeks. And Doug was very proud of the fact that he was a radiogeek.

There are two things that I know will make Doug's legacy in life complete. The first is for the Dance format to grow and eventually thrive in America, particularly Chicago. It may not be true, but Doug took a lot of pride in the belief that it was his posts on Radio-Info that led Big City Radio to launch Energy 92-7&5 years ago. He was devastated when they were sold and was constantly pushing other companies to give the Dance format a chance.

The second is for the continued growth of Radio-Info.com. If I have any say in the matter, we'll be here for a long time to come. When we first started there were major radio companies known as Jacor, Chancellor, and Evergreen. I hope that someday we'll have Radio-Info posters commenting on the time when radio stations existed on the AM and FM bands.

Oh wow.
I'm sorry to hear of this news, I had no idea who this guy was or how radio-info has become.
But thanks to him and the rest of the admin team, I have a hobby collecting airchecks. The boards are like a radio station... always there. Except this one doesn't change formats. Unlike Hot 106.3. These board fewl my passion for radio. Airchecks are what photo's are to sited people for me, as I am blind and parshely deaf. Any aircheck I have I can put a story behind it. I remember exactly what I was doing, how I was feeling at the time. I remember some while back when radio-info went to a new site look. You had to subscribe to post on the boards. Part of it was not accessible to screene readers, the link to actually sign-up. I was unable to sign up for posting of stuff. I remember sending an e-mail to admin, and prompto my request was taken care of. Thanks for that even to this day. Though I don't come here every day, I personally in memory of doug would like to help to keep this site alive. I may not have the money to get an LPFM running of the dance format in Bensalem, but I'd like to do something. I once asked Katie my girlfriend if this hobby was weird, and if I got so annoying. She put it like this: "if you didn't talk about radio, jingles and airchecks, you wouldn't be you." Ist a part of me and I cannot express in words my thanks for putting a huge family of people that shair such a love together.

I have no idea how you guyhs manage to pull this all off, not charging one single visitor ever for this site.
Thanks again and I shall prey for the family and you all.
God Bless. As I know what it is like to lose a loved one, my grandpop at age 11, my grandmom just over a year ago, and have almost lost my dad at age 13, and mom at age 20, please tell all those you love that you love them. You just never know when there last day may be. I feel deeply saddend and tears are in my eyes now as this hits close to home for me. I didn't know him either, but from what I've read on the postings, I wish I could've known him

John, after reading your post (twice), I'm fairly certain that wherever Doug is right now.......
he just received his wings!

Your post says it all! I only hope that everyone else here on this site gets a chance to read your post for themselves. It's a fine testament to Doug.

Oh, and one more thing that I really believe needs to be said........

You're a good man, John Holcomb.

You're a good man.

Please express my deepest sympathies to the family and other significant people in Doug's life. Best wishes in a tough time for all....

So true Lance,

In that sense we were "brothers" to that cause since he had a strong belief in the dance music format on the radio (he to Chicago, me to New York City). We've discussed the dance format, what we felt radio was doing wrong with it and were trying to formulate ideas and concepts. Through this board that Doug has created, we've also met other passionate dance fans such as CHRles, WYTZ, RobertMoore, midwestclubber, and professionals such as Richard Dalton, John Parker and Kris Henderson..just to name a few (sorry if I left names out). In that way, Doug helped create "family".

No question, we have to keep Doug's legacy going with Radio-Info.com. I'll contribute some funds if it means this board can exist. Unlike other radio boards where you have those that control things with an iron fist, this board allows for all expressions. Whether or not you agree, at least the viewpoints were heard.

I just want to express my sincerest sympathies to Doug's family and friends for this great loss. No matter what, no one can ever be ready to say good-bye to loved ones, especially to those who leave us way too early. May Doug rest in peace and may his family find comfort in knowing that Doug is in a good place.

I didn't know Doug, but I certainly appreciate the opportunity he provided all of us to expound upon radio. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Permit me to extend my condolences. It's hard to know what else to say, and perhaps that's enough.

Doug -

Your passion is something that is sorely missing in our business, and will be missed terribly on these boards. Rest in peace.

My heart goes out to his family - being that I'm just a year older than him, it kinda hits home. Life is way too short...

Bill,

to you, Doug's family and his RadioInfo family, please accept my deepest sympathies in this time of loss.

This is such tragic news to read. A young life taken away so prematurely. It looks like he accomplished so much in such a short period of time in his life. My sincere condolences go out to all of his friends and family in this very trying time.

Doug...thanks for providing an excellent forum for those of us to come and talk shop. God Bless You & may you rest in peace.

May those who knew and loved Doug be blessed and comforted in their time of sorrow. May they be reminded that they are richer for having known Doug, and that the way he touched their lives can never be taken away from them.

May we all keep Doug's family and friends in our prayers and thoughts during the days and weeks ahead. May they know that they are not alone in their time of sorrow.

May Doug rest in peace on that evergreen shore.

I can't believe this. I can't! I'm in absolute shock. A wonderful individual taken way too young. I had spoken to Doug numerous times by phone, but I only had the chance to meet with Doug in person a couple of times, and regret not having done more of it. Even though not having all that much contact with him, I felt like I've known him for many many years. I'm incredibly saddened by this news, it is hard to write.
I first met Doug by phone when I was working at KLNA Power 105.5 in Sacramento. I was on the air and we were announcing that the station had been sold and that the new owners (Salem) were going with Christian music. We had thousands of calls that day, I had taken hundreds on my shift alone, and one of them was Doug who must have been in the listening area or listening online and found out about it, and he asked a question that every other caller had been asking..."Are you guys really flipping?" But within a few seconds I knew he was not every other caller. He had briefly brought up how terrible it was and was suggesting ways to try and save or prolong the station or look for alternative buyers for the station who might keep it going as dance (as the deal with Salem was not finalized yet). He had even mentioned he would have loved to have gotten ahold of the station. I knew he was no ordinary caller and asked him for his number and called him as soon as I got off of my shift. I put him in touch with our owners and they went on a serious discussion. The next day I remember the owners as telling me he "really knew his stuff." From that point on we had contacted each other at times, and we had met up a couple of times when he had come to Sacramento, including one time where we had tried forever to find a place to eat that was open that late in Sacramento. I had given him some airchecks of Power 105.5 on a couple occassions and remember him describing all the ones he had, and I could see his passion for radio.
I never knew his age, but now knoing he was only one year older than me and all that knowledge he had, just blows me away. He could tell you specific details of a stunt that happened 10 years ago and a low rated small market station in the middle of nowhere, or something else that might be hard to find in a book written on the history of radio. He could tell you the most obscure radio factoid that happened many years ago. He had so many incredible ideas. He had to be one of the most intelligent people I've met in radio or elsewhere, extremely genuine and kind. I tried calling Doug a couple of months ago and couldn't get ahold of him. I wish I would have tried many more times. It had been a while since I had talked to him. I so wish I could have talked to you one more time. I'm in tears. You will be missed, and based on the posts already, we can see the impact that he had on people's lives. My condolences to all his family and friends, and Doug, my friend, may you rest in peace.
