After reading this post, I couldn't stop thinking about this the whole day. We chatted via email and we were very close to meeting up in NYC one time.

This is very sad news and I send my condolences to the family.

I've watched this thread grow over the last few days, and there is nothing I can say that hasn't been said before. Like the dozens of replies below, it is just so very sad to see someone so young - the same age as myself - to die so suddenly. Although I've never spoke with Doug, by reading everyone elses posts, you can tell he had a gift for "knowing the radio biz". My condolences go out to Doug's friends and family for their loss :(.<P ID="signature">______________

Hello All,

I did not know Doug, but this is a huge blow to the Radio-Info staff, while I am only a few years younger than Doug he had created a great website. Let us never forget one of the great founders of Radio-Info.com, Doug Fleming.

Bill is right I am sure Doug would not want us to be sad about his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Doug's family, Lance, Sam, and all his great Friends. This site just show how much talent he had and he will be missed.

This is very sad news, I really like Radio-Info. and appreciate all the hard work that goes into making it a fun place to frequent on a daily basis. Condolences to Doug Fleming's family and friends in this difficult time. Sending good thoughts your way.

This was truly a tragedy in every sense of the word. The circumstances surely add to the deep sense of grief and sadness that surround Doug's passing.

Again, my deepest condolences go out to Doug's family and to his many, many friends.

I regularly check it out once or twice a week, living just
downhill from Reno. But since your link went up the site
has been inaccessible!

How was it wrong to say that our lives are meaningless in the scheme of things?
How was it wrong to state that early deaths build immortal legacies while long lives often diminish legacies unless one is a major legend?
How was it wrong to name murdrers, rapists, monsters, and scumbags and diminsh their lives?
How was it wrong for me to say that my life was meaningless compared to Doug's?
How was it wrong for me to hold Nevada at fault for not searching and letting a man die?

Doug would be ashamed for the actions done here. I only wish that I was up there with him where mistreatment is nonexistant.

Not sure what's happening on your side of the Sierra, but I just checked the link and it works from here (Marysville, CA 40-miles north of Sacramento) not that that means anything on-line.

I can't say how long the link may work, since it appears that the free access is part of a rolling, seven day window... that would have begun 7/25.

You might check the link for accuracy, or do a search on the RGJ website for "Fleming."

I hope the paper updates the story when the Sheriff has any reports back.

Getting help in the middle of the Black Rock Desert is not easy. It is an arid region of lava beds and alkali flats, and recreational users are warned not to go alone.

It was very hot over the three days Doug was missing... (107-102-106)at Lovelock, the nearest National Weather Service recording station and Pershing Co. seat.

Cell phone service is non-existent except along (parts of?) I-80, some 40-60 miles from the main part of the desert. Satellite phones and some Ham radio bands are the only usable wireless communication out there, according to several Black Rock Desert user websites I ran across.

One user warns about driving problems:

"Some years you have to be more careful than others about small dunes nicknamed "playa serpents" that can form in random places. And ruts from former improperly-cleaned-up campsites can be hazards too. They're too small to see in time if you drive too fast," writes Ian Kluft on his website about the Desert. http://ian.kluft.com/blackrock/

Doug's SUV was reportedly stuck on or in a dune.

Regardless of how or what happened, what we can do now is pray for Doug's family and friends, and hope that their fond memories of him help to somehow ease his passing.

I trust that we won't see sharply worded commentaries about the above information that could be hurtful to those that knew and loved him.

If that happens, moderators are urged to pull this post and any other objectionable responses.

Was able to get through just now. Load time was much longer than
usual for this site, even with DSL, but this try it managed to squeak
by just before the browser timed out! Thanks for your help....

Why opt out? Because I speak the truth that our world is bleak and those who are dead are far better off than those who are alive? We let rapists and murderers off scot free, keep killers in office, and are moving to a polarized, extreme theocracy depending on which nation you are in. We let criminals live for years at the cost of millions from taxpayers but that same money could have been used to help save millions of innocent, young people who have AIDS, cancer, or get lost in remote areas. Why not comment on how Doug's untimely passing is a commentary on how screwed up our world is and how anyone reading this should get out of it and soon.
