Rochester radio old-timers who recall WAXC/1460 will be interested to know that Doug "Greaseman" Tracht, WAXC's one-time night host, is back on the air fulltime...not in Rochester, but in Jacksonville, Florida, where he enjoyed a lot of success after leaving the Flower City.
According to soon-to-be-colleague Bubba "The Love Sponge" Clem, "Grease" takes the now-vacant 3-7pm shift on classic rock WFYV (104.5) beginning Wednesday. No word yet on possible syndication...you'll remember Tracht was once a prominent player in the syndicated morning show game based out of Washington, DC, until one morning about 10 years ago he cracked one too many racially charged jokes for his station's and syndicator's brass to take. His public apologies for the misstep even became the focus of an episode of ABC Nightline, and from all appearances were heartfelt. But until recently he'd had to broker time on stations in the DC area to get regular on-air exposure. Looks like his exile is starting to come to an end.
It'll be interesting to see if Greasy makes it all the way back onto the satellite and into markets across the country. My guess is he will...and assuming he's found the way to effectively tread that fine line between edginess and offensiveness as a result of the hard lessons of experience, his career may enjoy a renaissance.
