Doug Moe: Campaign already going hog wild

DAVE MAGNUM, who is again running for Congress against 2nd District Rep. Tammy Baldwin, issued a press release Thursday expressing outrage over comments made by Baldwin at the Majestic Theater during Monday's event with Al Franken.
The release begins: "Tammy Baldwin kicked off her 2006 campaign for Congress with mudslinging by referring to her Republican opponent, Dave Magnum, as a pig."
I have not heard a tape of Baldwin's comments - played on Vicki McKenna's WIBA radio show the next day - but the Baldwin camp says she did not refer to Magnum specifically as a pig.
Rather, Baldwin said - and I'm paraphrasing here - that while the campaign in the next year might get dirty, she wouldn't participate. And then she quoted Madison attorney Steve Hurley, noting that Hurley often says, "Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it." ...
