Dove's Days Numbered?

I'm reading where the AC station in Albany, NY, "Magic 100.9," is in the process of moving to an AM station, in favor of a new format on the FM side. Some have compared Magic's playlist to Tampa's Dove, and as such, both stations are consistently top-rated, if not in the Top 5 or 10. But with this move taking place up north, is it time to start fretting about the beginning of the end of WDUV on 105.5 FM? Which AM station would be best for Dove's playlist?

So, if both stations are consistently top-rated, if not in the top 5 on the FM side, then why the hell consider moving it to the AM dial? Makes no sense. You don't want to mess around when something is working fine.

I guess you'd have to ask the fine folks at Pamal (owners of "Magic 100.9/590") for that explanation, RGS.

95% of music formats that move to AM end up dying quickly. Stations like WDUV have excellent 12+ numbers, but draw a huge percentage of people 55 and Older, thus are hard to sell. Thats why they are generally obsolete except for places like Tampa where there are large populations of retirees. I'm imagining that's why they are dumping it to AM in Albany. It is probably darn near impossible for them to sell.

BTW, WDUV is a great station; I found it years ago when I first visited Tampa Bay in the early 90s, and listen often online. Don't know why their stream is in mono, though ???

I don't think COX has an AM station in this area.

Ok I'll play...

Take the hypothetical:

Swap: Equipment of 105.5 (back) to CCU. In return COX gets 970 plus cash. Cox puts WDUV and intellectual on 970. WFLA and format go to 105.5.

CCU gets the "North of the Bay" coverage they desire and aren't getting with 970 or 97.9-HD2.
Cox gets cash to straighten out 102.5's wind blown and tilted 1667' antenna.

Scenario may sound whacky, but over the last 15 years, who would notice whacky, anymore?

One of the biggest rumours among the boards has been, when will Tampa will get an FM news station...

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

If that were to happen, and if I were Cox, I would take advantage the the vacant 970 spot to do a news/talk station. A lot of longtime 970 listeners would stick around out of habit and all Cox would have to do is copy the formula of WSB Atlanta or WDBO Orlando. This is probably what Clear Channel is afraid of and why such a deal would never happen.

As for the original question of which AM would be best for The Dove's playlist, I think it would fit like a glove on 860. It would be almost like having the old WGUL back.

Hard to sell or hard to be buyable? Here is a station with almost 700,000 listeners. This "right people" mind set is inane. As if no one over 55 buys anything. Someone explain the logic. PPM should be kind to DUV as they have many "captive" and accidental listeners as well. What about the 30 year old sitting in the waiting room of a doctor for 45 minutes. That person would never enter DUV in a diary, however, they listened. Since the beginning of time newspapers have been selling cume quite successfully and agencies/buyers buy into "circulation", however, when it comes to radio the buyers over look cume (circulation). Radio needs to get away from the mindset of "we're number 11 in the market, however, we are number two in our target". Tell ya what, I'll take 700,000 humans listening to my station hands down! The Tampa Tribune advertises "More people in Tampa read the Tribune than any other newspaper" They aren't selling demos, they are selling circulation.

Driving across the Howard Franklin about two hours ago. The radio blasing WDUV and the windows wide open. WDUV played an uptempo tune by the Eagles followed by Creedence. I coulda been listening to the Eagle. They didn't even run the usual DOVE voice between the cuts. The Dove is one wild and crazy station. I can never sit still or drive 55 when the DOVE is rockin!

Actually, that "uptempo Eagles tune" you heard was, according to Yes.com, America's "Sister Golden Hair," a staple at many an AC station. Incidentally, WDUV would play The Eagles' "Take It To The Limit" just a few songs later; they had also played "Best Of My Love" in the previous hour, as well.

Unfortunately, just like the old WGUL-AM, 860 has serious nighttime coverage problems in North Tampa.

If anyone in the biz has half of a brain cell still working in their skull, they'll leave Dove right where it is.
