Downeast's 'Media Mutt' discloses the Forest City Arbs

It surprises me there's no chatter on this board about ratings. Afraid of censors? Too busy dubbing barter? Tired out after late night partying with BNL? (subquestion: Does hanging out with a peaked-in-the-mid-90s, family oriented Canadian band count as partying? sub-sub question: Does laughing at a Dave Coulier joke ever really count as laughing?)

Anyway, Al Diamon lays out the (alleged) numbers over at Downeast.com.

p.s. Just joshin' about BNL. No disrespect to the folks at Saga--they had a lovely book.
And no hurt feelings to the band either... if you lived through the 90s and never listened to 'Maybe You Should Drive'... well, you weren't cool in MY book.

OK, I've long questioned the veracity of Arfitron's survey methodology vis a vis sample size, diary placement, the rather squirrelly definition of the Portland Metro (I mean, come on, Bridgeton is considered Metro and Biddeford-Saco is relegated to the TSA?) etc. Plus, given that 12+ M-F 6A-Mid numbers hardly tell the full story, I wonder how they're motivating the troops over at Citadel these days. I mean, you can keep reminding your patrons they shouldn't judge your restaurant simply by the aromas emanating from the kitchen, but if the fumes are consistantly foul, the diners are going to eventually conclude they'd be better off at some other eatery. Too bad. The fare used to be pretty good over at One City Center.

Excellent definition of the Portland Metro. That's why very few people use it for advertising buys - most are now a combination of two or three counties....however..that's not going to help the kitchen smell..as Citadel apparently doesn't even have one station in the top 5 Adults 25-54.

Biff: Agreed. Arbitron's insistence upon defining survey areas by "counties" is a pre-zip code line of thinking. Which is another reason why they are fading rapidly into the sunset.

Adbuyer1: Agreed. Agencies are in a tough spot. So to try to determine the Portland Metro audience, you have to add in Androscoggin (uh huh) and York (Sanford and Kittery. Yeah, right.)

And on top of that -- as you more or less implied by your post -- you're stuck with a client dictate for 25-54. Ouch.

I go back far enough to remember when 18-49 was the standard for adult radio buys. Then 25-54 became the barometer to reach "real" adults. But now you look at the reality of today, when half of 25-29 year olds are living with Mommy and Daddy.... And they're "adults"?

Then the clients blame the agency when they don't get the results they say they expected.

I feel for you, my friend.

But I guess I'm getting off topic, aren't I? :)

Okay, I admit it. I had to google 'bnl canada' to know who you were talking about ???

Andy
They actually did well in their demo. Keep in mind, these are 12+ numbers they're referencing with the key word being PLUS. Stations that do well in the 65 PLUS, which can be 20 years, generally will have good 12+ numbers. CYY has a narrow focus of 12-34 years olds.
