DR. DEAN EDELL STATES HIS POLITICS

at about 5:27pm PT on 12/30/07 (Sunday) - weekend re-run on KXNT/Las Vegas...have no idea when it was live...Dr. Dean stated that a lot of people have always wondered about his politics. Then, he said that he would go for a true MODERATE Republican if offered one. Then, he criticized the far, right wing Conservatives who today dominate the party. However, a few minutes later he also said that he's always been a liberal, and that he believes that the government can help people. We already know that Dr. Dean is very strong *Social Liberal* when it comes to sex-ed, medical marijuana, etc.

An interesting discussion followed, for you fellow biologists. He said that the history of the human race has been competition for resources, not sharing amongst groups of people. However, this may be just one interpretation, as I've heard other perspectives offered elsewhere by other Docs.

Then, he said that we truly should have two parties, liberals to balance the Republicans.

I didn't hear the whole discussion. Please contribute what I missed and then maybe it can go to the off the air board. He also discussed conservatives and happiness. Then he talked about values in the country versus the city, says he got happier after he moved to the country.

Dr. Dean's live timeslot is such a strange one that most of his affiliates don't run him live and replay him on weekends. He's live weekdays at 1 PM Pacific/4 PM Eastern for one hour.

I recorded his 5 shows this morning off America's Talk XM 158 but haven't listened yet. I think they were all reruns.

In the past I've heard the good doctor described as "libertarian"...

Certainly true on today's replay, Dr. Dean said, "Wow, yet another study shows that medical Cannibas stops tumor cells! (he sighs) And (yet it is still) banned after 30 years?"

Dr. Dean's politics

Socially liberal, suspicious of "faith based" political movements, especially those promoting abstinence

Skeptical of government money-churning, but favoring stronger regulation of both drug and nutritional supplement industries (especially the latter)

Not necessarily pro-marijuana but points out that alcohol is the far bigger problem

When Rush's show was originally offered to affiliates by Ed F. McLaughlin's EFM service, Dr. Dean's show was also put in as a two-for-one deal. Dean's show, then (and still) based out of KGO, was popular enough at the time on the West Coast to have likely garnered some "EIB" affils. When Jacor bought EFM in 1997 and absorbed it into Premiere, this "two-for-one" stopped being the case, though I'd have a hard time even thinking of one major station that carried his show live besides KGO prior to 1997.

I can't think of a single station in my area (Cleveland) that carries his show at all. WTAM/1100 dropped in in 1998, and it bounced around a bit between Akron talkers WHLO/640 and WARF/1350. WJR will air it on Saturday nights, given if any of their brokered local programming doesn't interfere.

And that's a shame, because I've always liked his show.
