PD/midday jock Dr. John Winston, who took WAPE-AM/Jacksonville to greatness in 1975-76 returns to the air tomorrow (Sunday 7/26/09) on new Internet station, 147KXOA/Sacramento.

Dr. John's first shift will be 2-4PM (Pacific Time; 5-7PM in Jacksonville) Sunday; in the future most likely 2-6PM on Saturdays. Sounds as good as he did back in the day.

Streaming online from www.147kxoa.com

Bill Burkett was PD of WAPE in the time frame you listed. Burkett and Tom Murphy split mid-days.

Who is/was Dr. John Winston?

You note in the Memphis thread that he brought Rick Dees to WHBQ from WMPS. That was John Long, who I believe is running the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame now.

Dr. John brought the Greaseman to WAPE. One of the great top 40 PD's during the heyday of AM Top 40. Get a great education on the business then by reading this online book. Congratulations to John. Glad to hear he's back on the air in some way!

Wow, there is a name from my past. Could this be the same Bill Burkett who was PD of WBSR in Pensacola? I was working there part time in 1968 while stationed at Corry Field. Where is he now??

John Long and Dr. John Winston are one and the same. He brought Greaseman to WAPE, and he hired Rick Dees at WHBQ after Dees was blown out at WMPS. I think he also used the "Dr. John" moniker at Fox97 in Atlanta when he did nights there.

Check out John's e-book Puttin' On The Hits at www.oidar.com. It's a really good read from a guy who programmed and worked at some real heavy-hitters back in the day... WQXI, WFOM, XEROK80, WHBQ, WAPE, KRUX, etc.

Seems like it was 1975-76 that Dr. John (John Long) was at WAPE.

He took the station to double digits in 1976.

My Old Fart's Disease is kickin' in but this is correct! BIG APE

Well when were Jack Manning and Cleveland Wheeler on in the afternoon? I listened to them.
Larry Dixon did mornings and Winn-Dixie TV commericials.

Cleveland was at APE in 1971 first time around , went to BIG WAYS, Kaplans other station in Charlotte in 1974 and back to APE in 1975...BIG APE

I remember Dr. John Winston from the Big APE during that time period. It was sometime around 1975 when I discovered the Big APE and started listening to the Greaseman mornings, and I stayed with AM 690 most of the day. I was still in high school and had just begun my radio career locally during that time...
