Dr. John Winston (WHBQ PD who brought Rick Dees to the station from WMPS) returns to the air tomorrow (Sunday 7/26/09) via Internet startup 147KXOA/Sacramento.

Dr. John's first shift will be 2-4PM Sunday Pacific Time - 4-6 PM in Memphis(in the future he will probably be doing 2-6PM Saturdays).

He still sounds as good as he did in the 70's (Dr. John did mornings at WHBQ after Rick Dees left for KHJ). Be there.

Live streaming at www.147kxoa.com Format is Timeless Rock & Roll and Soul from the 60's and 70's

I read about this at laradio.com. The founder said that they are going to play 1400 songs "with no MOR crossovers, no bubblegum and no sappy pop songs and “we make fun of the artists and songs that we don't play, no Chubby Checker, no Helen Reddy, no Trini Lopez, no Carpenters, no Captain & Tennille, no Petula Clark, no Brenda Lee, no Abba, etc. And we’re happy to make fun of the songs and artists we don’t play.”

I don't quite understand the reasoning behind "making fun" of certain artists and songs that some people might like. That might make sense on a classic hard rock format where the audience has a low tolerance for anything they don't consider rock, but why do that on an oldies format.

I might check it out, but anyone who plans on "making fun" of Brenda Lee has lost my respect from the start.

WTIX-FM in New Orleans is my kind of oldies station. They pretty much play anything that was a hit from the 1950s to the 1980s. Too bad they don't stream because they are fun to listen to.

We're just having fun, Brian.

The station imaging makes fun of radio imaging (often not even mentioning what station you're listening to). We make fun of the "moldy oldie" station. We make fun of everyone, including ourselves.

This morning the morning intern was tied up and made to monitor to the "moldy oldie" station and write down the songs they played so you wouldn't have to listen. They didn't even have to make up songs; what was played on this other Internet station was pretty funny.

The music is post Beatles 60's (with some exceptions like earloier Motown and Chuck Berry) through the 70's with a small amount of 80's. Most comments from radio people are that the music is awesome.

Try it, you might like it.

Dr. John Winston's regular shift (John Long) begins today. Saturdays 2-6PM Pacific time (4-8 PM in Memphis).

Nice mention in the KFBK/Sacramento website over the weekend. They seem to like the Giant X over at KFBK.

Sorry Brenda Lee fans, Dr. John isn't allowed to play her either.
