Dr. Scar, R.I.P.

Longtime Tucson (and Phoenix) TV program director and general manager
Jack Jacobson passed away on Monday at age 87.

In the 1960s at KGUN-TV channel 9 he also played several bizarre characters
on various local programs and spots. The one he's most remembered for is
"kindly, lovable, Dr. Scar"--host of the Saturday night "Chiller" horror movies.

There is a tribute page to Jack/Dr. Scar on Ray Lindstrom's azsurvivors.com website:

Also a story posted on the AZ Daily Star website:

Hopefully you won't get intercepted by the Star's "register or else" mandate.
That would certainly be a "chilling tale" or a "gory story" as Dr. Scar would
say when promoting next week's movie. So long, Jack. :'(

....kindly, lovable Dr. Scar like many other Tucsonans that grew up with him, his voice on many commercials in both radio & television will be greatly missed! He was so informative when he would visit schools around town. It makes one wonder if by any chance KGUN will do a special on him. It would be sooo cool to see those old B&W videos from his Chiller show. In addition to Dr. Scar, he was Prof. Outer Space on Science Fiction Theatre that aired on sundays also on KGUN. Yes, Sir . . . he was influential to me as well as other future voice people in the Old Pueblo. Descanse en paz, Jack! ".....nighty night, & plesant dreeeems muu ah ah ah ah" !

Did he also play "Marshall K-GUN" in the mid-50's?

I was on that show twice and the thing I remember most about that character is his really heavy face makeup - almost like white paint. Weird!

Jack was not Marshall K-GUN. The best-known marshall was Bob Love
(later Uncle Bob on KZAZ-TV 11), he was preceded by Stan Norman.

I've also heard a third name (Burt Oien) bandied about who may have
originated the character early on and may be the person you recall
from the '50s. KGUN did not sign on until about 1956 and I don't know
how soon afterwards the Marshall K-GUN show started.

Back to the other alter egos...besides Dr. Scar and Prof. Otto Space,
Jack also played a character called "the Baron." I don't recall if there
was a show involved, but the Baron was prominent in commercials for
Bargain Center Furniture (following copy paraphrased)--

Baron (holding two lamps):
"But what about these lamps, Austin?"

Austin Agron (store owner):
"Oh, they're free!"

Baron:
"Free??!!" (drops lamps...lamps break)

That B&W video tape spot kept airing for years after color production
became the norm.

BTW, does anyone have the Wally Sevits tag (jingle with multiple slide
changes) they could post on You Tube? ;)

Since this has been converted to a TV board, I'll ask if Channel 18 is off the air.
