DRC-FM to stream live

DRC-FM has posted on its Facebook page that it plans to resume streaming next week. This will be the first live stream from 102.9 since April 2001, when it dropped out of Broadcast.com over the SAG/AFTRA fee issue. Too bad that almost all the songs that made DRC-FM distinctive in these days of homogenized "classic hits" have been purged this year. You can't even request a '60s song during the 5 p.m. hour anymore -- just '70s and '80s. At least the world will be able to hear Ron Sedaille and his classic jingle package along with the requests every Saturday night.

Why bother programming an HD2 if they don't stream that? Only the radio geeks here are listening to the HD2.

For some reason, Buckley's still pushing the dead-in-the-water HD Radio. On the Facebook group, people who miss the '50s and '60s music are being advised to buy an HD Radio or get a car that has one. What cars are those? I thought the Sirius XM monopoly had all the automakers sewn up as far as what auxiliary radio service they can offer. And if I'm not mistaken, all but one manufacturer has stopped making HD sets, so they're not exactly easy to find at retail.

HD radio comes in Audi, BMW, some Cadillac, most Fords, most Hyundais, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, the Mazda CX5, Mercedes, Mini, Scion, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.

If you're the President of a radio group, you can also get HD radio in a Tesla, Rolls Royce, Porsche, and Bentley.

HD home sets? Denon, Marantz, McIntosh, Onkyo, Sangean.

and of course, the Insignia portable.

Now, that's not saying these are cost-effective or realistic solutions... but they're out there.

Broadcast.com... WOW... There's a blast from the past... That was like the preferred way of streaming any radio stations online. What a difference ten years makes, huh?

And if you're really rolling in the bucks, there's DaySequerra. I have access to one of their HD mod monitors and judging by the factory service I'd avoid them.

It would be a treat to hear their HD2/HD3 online.

Yeah. Mark Cuban sold Broadcast.com to Yahoo for some unearthly dot-com boom sum and wound up putting the money into a pro basketball team. That worked out well for him. Yahoo was left with a radio stream amalgamator site that would be worthless in a few years.

I was a regular listener to DRC-FM back when they streamed. But I have literally hundreds of stations to choose from if I want 70's and 80's. So why listen anymore?

They can get away with it because people don't realize they can get almost the exact same station in any market these days. I've got friends who will go on vacation and use that app and site to listen to Kiss 95.7 and The River 105.9.

I think people tend to underestimate the connection people have with their "local" radio station. Yeah, I can listen to Z100 anywhere I go, but I listen to 92 PRO-FM because it "feels like home" listening to PRO. When I went away to college, I'd still listen to WAAF online because it felt like home.

Similarly, that's why I think people would be interested in streaming DRC-FM.

This is great news, but I'm beginning to wonder if there is some pre-April 1 stunting going on here. Can someone provide the FB page link and/or an update?

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting to Radio-Info, so bear with me if I do something wrong here.... Regarding the DRC-FM stream, it would be great to listen to Rockin' Ron Sedaille live in real-time since I live in Ohio! However, I agree with Jmb 65 that they might be just pulling an April Fool's joke on us...

But the page is now in the impossible-to-navigate "timeline" format and I can't find the post anymore. It came in response to someone's question and had a "we hope to have it running" caveat attached to it, but it certainly looked legit. Why would they "stunt" by lying about something so many of the station's fans have been pleading for for so long?

It's no joke. Corporate management was able to come to an agreement with a company to provide streaming of WDRC-FM. We are working out some bugs with RDS issues at the moment but hope to have the stream up and running on www.drcfm.com as soon as possible. I'm sorry we don't have an exact date but I'm fairly certain it's any day now.

Well, I must say that is great news that we will be able to hear DRC-FM online very soon! When I first heard about this via Facebook, I thought it was an April Fool's joke, but I am relieved that is wasn't the case. :)

By the way, CTListener, the Facebook post you were seeking is still on there - you would have to continue scrolling through "Posts by Others" until you get to the listener's comment ("I tried the Listen Live Button...").
