DRC-FM Trending Up

Although it looks like a 13% loss from Summer to Fall, DRC-FM is actually trending up since the Fall Part 1 book. That Part 1 book was a disastrous 22% drop from the summer. This book puts them up over 11% since part 1.

My gut feel was that they were going to have a HUGE loss. I guess I can't trust my gut anymore.

Be patient. With what they're doing on the station, they have nowhere to go but down a lot more.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed a tightening of the playlist. More legitimate "big hits," fewer obscurities or stiffs. Middays, it almost sounds like an uptempo AC station of the mid-80s -- lots of familiar '80s and '70s songs. Drives and evenings rock a little harder, but I'm not hearing the lower-charting items I was hearing in November.

Slowly but surely, it seems to be turning into a classic hits/oldies hybrid, with the emphasis on classic hits. They still play a lot of soul, but I only hear songs like "Please Please Me" or "Doo Wah Diddy" or "Rhinestone Cowboy," which would stick out on a classic hits station, two or three times an hour now, whereas back in November we were being jerked back and forth between decades and styles every other song.

The little uptick in the numbers with more familiar music doesn't surprise me, although I rather enjoyed the station's brief haphazard period.

Don't worry, as this station pulls further away from the 60s and 70s era, it will have less and less to draw listeners. After all, the station never promotes and is still programmed by a crack committee that puts value on what people request at weddings over the weekend.

The DRC calls and long-time talent Larry & Doug will keep the station resilient for a while, but the ship remains rudderless.

I'd love to see a sample hour of sister station WSEN-FM in Syracuse. They had a great fall book. They must not be getting the second-hand music logs from big brother anymore.
