DRC made this Satellite Guy back into a FM Fan

If you know me you would know I have always been a SatelliteGuy. Many of you know that I own and operate America's Largest and Most Popular Satellite Website at www.satelliteguys.us. And since the advent of Satellite Radio I have been a loyal subscriber I was of XM's original subscribers back in 2001. I was someone who tuned out local radio because he loved what he heard on Satellite Radio. I liked Satellite Radio so much I had 6 radios for each satellite service subscribed at one time.

But then then the big Sirius XM merger happened and almost instantly Satellite Radio started to suck. The vast playlists were cut down, the live DJ's were cut out and voice tracked DJ's came in. Satellite Radio took a major flush down the crapper.

I cut my number of subscribed radios down from 12 to just 2. Over the past year I have found myself listening more to the web streaming of WCBS FM out of NYC then listening to my satellite radio.

And then over the holidays I found the Christmas music that WDRC was playing, it was more upbeat and rock and roll and had a good feel to it. And it had DJ's I remember when I was growing up. With Jerry Kristafer and the dry wit of Friendly Floyd Wright (who was actually the first "real DJ" I met when I was a kid!)

I kept it on for the Christmas Music and the DJ's it felt like listening to an old friend. As the Christmas music was coming to a close I felt like I would soon be moving back to WCBS for my music listening. In fact when the Christmas music stopped I moved back to WCBS.. when one day in the car I hit the DRC preset when trying to put my car stereo in Bluetooth mode so I could listen to WCBS. It was a song I liked.. so I kept it on... song ended and it was another song I liked... and it was one great song after another. Gone was all the doo wop, oldies and Elvis that I remembered DRC for, instead I found a great mix of the 70's and 80's with an occasional oldies gem thrown in. I was happy and kept my radio tuned to DRC in the car.

In work however I remained a WCBS listener as I work in one of the skyscrapers in downtown Hartford and radio reception is not good up here, so I listen to Internet radio on my Logitech Squeezebox. But that all changed last week when I found out here at Radio-Info that the BIG D was now streaming online.

I got to admit listening to FM radio isn't that bad and I don't mind the commercials. Its the music and the personalities that make a station and I think WDRC has the perfect combination going on right now and that has this SatelliteGuy not afraid to say he would rather listen to FM radio again... but not any FM radio... just America's First FM WDRC!

So hats off to everyone at WDRC!

Well I might have to listen to WCBS FM again tomorrow... the new WDRC streaming is now MIA.

Hopefully it comes back soon. :D

Wow Scott! This is not normally not like you! Thank goodness it sounds like WDRC-FM finally fixed their recent audio problems, too! :)

Hey Scott,

I just wanted to say thanks. A few of us who work at The Big D read and participate in these boards, and we're only human - sometimes reading it get can us down. Kind of how any person would feel if they were criticized at their own job publicly, KWIM?

I saw your message on the board from yesterday and shared it with everyone here at the station (including Jerry and Friendly Floyd!). We've always known terrestrial radio is best, and we're thrilled that you re-discovered us and feel that way too.

Regarding the streaming, yes, it's down. The stream was not publicly released by us and is not posted on our website because we had some issues we needed to work out. We're still working on them... :) - but honest, we hope it's up and "official" very soon.

Thanks for trying us again, and for having something nice to say. Your mom would be proud.

Thanks Grahame for the reply. :)

As someone who runs one of America's bigger online forums, I can tell you from experience that the majority of posts are always complaints and it is rare when someone posts something positive. Its one of the reasons why I couldn't keep my feelings about the station bottled up any more and decided to share them.

As one who works in media I have plenty of pot shots taken at me over the years and before they used to upset me, but now if someone takes a shot at me it does not even phase me anymore. Some people don't understand that NOTHING is perfect and never will be, but if you think about it its what makes us unique. And this is what makes radio great and its why there are so many formats.

I am sure there are many of us who read and post here who no only love radio but in one way or another wanted to be or are part of a radio station. When I was younger I used to DJ across the state and was one of the first mobile DJ's who only used a computer to entertain. At that time many stations wanted to hire me for weekend on air gigs and even two clusters wanted to hire me to digitize their radio station. (Basically they wanted to clone what I had.) but I never took the jobs because to be honest I was making more playing bars and clubs. It was a fun time in my life. :) Now thinking back I keep wondering what I missed by not going on air at a real station.

But with a forum like this all of us radio wannabes and those who make a living off of broadcasting find it easy to play armchair quarterbacks from behind our computer screens. I would say that not many of them have had to go through many of the things you have to deal with in your position and don't know how hard some of the things you have had to do in your position. With all of the tough decisions and moves you have had to make I must say you have done them well and throughout it all you have still managed to keep your smile on the radio. So no matter what people post on message boards always keep your chin up as there will always be someone somewhere who thinks they can do a better job.

I can't wait until you get the streaming up again, I think you are going to find a lot of folks outside Connecticut tuned in listening. Last year I went on vacation on a cruise and there were a lot of people from England on board. When talking with a few of them and they found out I was from Connecticut they actually asked me about WDRC and if I listened. Turns out there are many over there who love watching Rockin Ron's All Request Saturday Night Videos on Youtube. They all told me they would love to listen to the full show and it looks like soon they will be able to and enjoy just like we do here in Connecticut.

Keep up the good work and I will be listening. :)

If you read this, PLEASE stream WDRC-HD2! It's such an awesome HD2 format that very few can hear because very few people have the HD radios and it doesn't stream online.
