If you know me you would know I have always been a SatelliteGuy. Many of you know that I own and operate America's Largest and Most Popular Satellite Website at www.satelliteguys.us. And since the advent of Satellite Radio I have been a loyal subscriber I was of XM's original subscribers back in 2001. I was someone who tuned out local radio because he loved what he heard on Satellite Radio. I liked Satellite Radio so much I had 6 radios for each satellite service subscribed at one time.
But then then the big Sirius XM merger happened and almost instantly Satellite Radio started to suck. The vast playlists were cut down, the live DJ's were cut out and voice tracked DJ's came in. Satellite Radio took a major flush down the crapper.
I cut my number of subscribed radios down from 12 to just 2. Over the past year I have found myself listening more to the web streaming of WCBS FM out of NYC then listening to my satellite radio.
And then over the holidays I found the Christmas music that WDRC was playing, it was more upbeat and rock and roll and had a good feel to it. And it had DJ's I remember when I was growing up. With Jerry Kristafer and the dry wit of Friendly Floyd Wright (who was actually the first "real DJ" I met when I was a kid!)
I kept it on for the Christmas Music and the DJ's it felt like listening to an old friend. As the Christmas music was coming to a close I felt like I would soon be moving back to WCBS for my music listening. In fact when the Christmas music stopped I moved back to WCBS.. when one day in the car I hit the DRC preset when trying to put my car stereo in Bluetooth mode so I could listen to WCBS. It was a song I liked.. so I kept it on... song ended and it was another song I liked... and it was one great song after another. Gone was all the doo wop, oldies and Elvis that I remembered DRC for, instead I found a great mix of the 70's and 80's with an occasional oldies gem thrown in. I was happy and kept my radio tuned to DRC in the car.
In work however I remained a WCBS listener as I work in one of the skyscrapers in downtown Hartford and radio reception is not good up here, so I listen to Internet radio on my Logitech Squeezebox. But that all changed last week when I found out here at Radio-Info that the BIG D was now streaming online.
I got to admit listening to FM radio isn't that bad and I don't mind the commercials. Its the music and the personalities that make a station and I think WDRC has the perfect combination going on right now and that has this SatelliteGuy not afraid to say he would rather listen to FM radio again... but not any FM radio... just America's First FM WDRC!
So hats off to everyone at WDRC!
