Man... I'm in over joyed that we would actually be a "beta tester" type market for FM eXtra. Rochester's radio and TV kinda stinks because we are such a little market. I mean, we can't even get our market area's digital CBS and ABC stations, and we've got to HD Stations (the classical station and the NPR "downright liberal" talk station), and all radio besides 88.7 (89.3 The Current) and KROC-AM 1340 just aren't worth listening to [in my opinion, anyway]

Of course, who else has money to play with? MPR OF COURSE! The classical station has it running... The guy who installed it was able to pick up the carrier 200(!!!) miles away! Clear as a bell he says.

200 miles? Excellent!

Here is a little background on DRE:

200 miles? that's it?

I was able to pick up WBZ AM 1030 on the NY thruway out near Buffalo NY, in crystal clear HD! thats over 400 miles!

Somebody tell Mr. "HD" that is apples to oranges, and we didn't wipe two adjacents in this test.

HD READY SAID: "I was able to pick up WBZ AM 1030 on the NY thruway out near Buffalo NY, in crystal clear HD! thats over 400 miles!"

Thats great. I managed to get WBBM-HD in Cincinnati near local sunset. WJR and WLW have enormous daytime digital footprints. When traveling along I-71 north WLW can be heard in digital reliablly out to Mansfield OH and sporatically out to Medina OH. Thats over 200 miles! WJR delivered a reliable digital signal from Columbus OH to Erie PA.

oh yeah????

Well I picked up WBZ in Myrtle Beach, around local sunset in crystal clear, reliable HD......thats about 800 miles!

LOL ;D

How's that digital reception after dark???

I can reliably hear London's Virgin Radio - www.virginradio.co.uk - in crystal clear digital stereo all over Southern California in my car (on my cell phone) or at home in the Los Angeles area (on my Soundbridge Network Music Player) at all hours of the day and night.

That's 5,456 miles.

Apples, oranges and plums.

VSA WROTE: "How's that digital reception after dark???"

Is that question real or rhetorical? I sure you know that AM IBOC isn't allowed after dark!

Thats great. But isn't there a more appropriate forum to discuss this seeing that you are not referring to HD radio?!

I thought this thread was supposed to be discussing DRE's FMeXtra system. It got sidetracked to HD-R AM. I chimed in with something that smokes both digital systems.

FMeXtra is a great improvement and addition to FM radio. It has lots of positives with probably no negatives. I like it.

HD Radio is a mixed bag, It creates a digital world for radio, but introduces more negatives than positives. I loathe it.

Sometimes we get carried away with trying to improve what we are familiar with while the rest of the world passes us by. Put away the buggy whips boys. Better figure out a way soon to compete with Internet delivered radio.

This is an excellent and historically accurate article, even though it does leave out some of the juiciest details of just how the cartel managed to get to where they are today.

Read this article CAREFULLY. Then read BETWEEN the lines. It is also very important to realize that the interviewee didn't say just as much as what he did say which already was far more than the cartel would have liked to have been printed regarding the events which led to the development of HD/IBOC as it is being marketed and sold by the all-powerful uBunkwitis (sorry, I mean iBiquity).

DRE's a member of the cartel, so they have to pull their punches somewhat. It's clear that they've developed a far superior product that doesn't share most of HD's flaws and is capable of delivering more content using less bandwidth but it'll be limited to niche uses in the US because the cartel wants it that way.
