Dream Lineups

You are in charge of a radio station, and every current radio personality in Western Pennsylvania is available to be hired.

What would your lineup look like?

I say it all depends on the format. For example, if I owned 3WS, this would be my lineup:

Jim Merkel and Cari Griffith - Mornings
Margie Konstantine - Middays
Joe Fenn - PM Drive
Sean Israel - Evenings
Brother Matt - Overnights

It's your dream station. Any format you want.

Mine would look something like this:

Scott Paulsen & Jim Krenn - Mornings
Margie Konstantine - Middays
Sean McDowell - PM Drive
Vinnie Ferguson - Evenings
Matt Newport - Overnights

News provided by the WJPA news staff

And there would be absolutely no place for Bubba

How about this for an entertaining talk station... and I assume $$$ is no object

530-9am O'Brein and Geary
9am-Noon Fred Hansburger(got to keep the right wing happy)
Noon-3pm Dimitri (got to keep the libretarians happy)
3-6pm I'm stuck on this one, looking for someone who's funny and witty and non offensive like my morning show..E-mail tapes and resumees
6-10pm Sports talk with Thor Tolo and Ellis Cannon with occasional comintary by Myron Cope
10pm-1am Lynn Collin(got to put something on to keep the left wing happy)
1am-530am Doug Hoerth-- closest thing to George Norey

Fully staffed news room 24/7...all liners cut by Charlie VanDyke with a complete sung jingle package. (possibly something like TM's Shockwave)

Remember I am getting close to becoming an AARP member, so I think diffrently then you young whipper snappers! This format is targeted to the over 50 crowd. A sales staff would be hired that can relate to the demo, can call on local direct clients and do not camp out next to a fax machine for orders from agencies.

Thats my story and I'm stickin to it.

Carry on! ;D ;D

Jim, I don't know whether to congratulate you on the creative misspelling of most names, or putting together a lineup that would actually get worse ratings than WPTT does.

O'Brien and Garry? Their peak was 25 years ago. John is 75. Let him sleep in.

If it was truly any format I want, it likely wouldn't be in business very long, since I'm an aficionado of easy listening. As much as we loved WEZE-FM, the last known beautiful music station in Pittsburgh, we knew it wasn't going to last forever. And it didn't.

But if it WAS profitable like it used to be, here's my chosen lineup:

Joe Fenn - mornings
Debbie Larson - middays
Peter Morley - afternoons
Pat Bridges - evenings

Hey Boss

Pardon my spelling, 'twas a long day. I am making the assumption that all the talent listed are in their prime... this is fantasy land correct? Just imagine what a kick a** talker this could have been... Ah I've figured out what to do with PM drive, here's my revised line up

530-9am O'Brien and Gary
9-12pm Fred
12-3pm Dimitri
3-7pm Sports Talk Thor, Ellis & Myron
7-10pm Roy Fox
10-1am-Lynn
1-530am Doug

Oh and another thing, this station would be the flagship of the Steelers, Pirates and Pens

No, I think you got the premise wrong. This is how it was presented:

You are in charge of a radio station, and every current radio personality in Western Pennsylvania is available to be hired.

Didn't say anything about when they were in their prime. So you have Fred, Lynn and Doug, all of whom are more stale than last November's bagels. I would argue that Dimitri never had a prime.

Back to the topic. My dream lineup would be consisting of an all sports format
6-9am Thor Tolo
9-noon Myron Cope
noon-3 Paul Alexander
3-7 Stan Savran and Guy Junker
7-12midnight Ellis Cannon
Midnight-6am Tim Benz

Hey Todd

Good line up (in my opinion) glad to know someone else like's Thor's show well enough to bequithe a drive slot to him.

OK, here's my TALK station...

5:30-9AM Jimmy Roach reunited with Steve Hansen
9A-noon Scott Paulsen
noon-3 Sean McDowell
3-6 Savran and Ellis Cannon
6-10p ME
10p-2a Todd Wright from Sports Fan Radio
2-6A The Greaseman (taped from his show in DC).

So there.

I wonder what Jimmy and Steve would sound like together after all these years?

No way Savran and Ellis Cannon could ever work together. Ellis gets nervous if the spotlight isn't on him all the time.

Ellis was a part of Stan's show on 970 for a while, doing updates. The on-air chemistry seemed very good. And don't they work together on the Steeler postgame call-in show, or is Stan gone?

Stan is now doing the Steeler post game show on ESPN radio with Mark Madden. This will be his 2nd season with Madden. However, I did enjoy when Ellis and Stan did the postgame show together on 970.

Ellis USED to work with his brother, too. Heard him lately? Ellis is a star now, not a role player on someone else's show.

True Boss, and I will be the first to admit that I liked the Cannon Brothers stint on 1250, Ellis was the entertaining one and his brother was more of the numbers geek, which played well together, so well in fact that in my dream lineup, which would be sports talk, I would put them back together. My station, provided I am allowed to use some former talent that is no longer in the market but still very much living and breathing would look something like this

6am-10am Tunch and Wolf
10am-2pm Stan Savran
2pm-6pm Mark Madden
6pm-10pm Cannon Brothers
10pm-2am Rocco Pendola (though last I heard he was in school in California)
2am-6am Tim Benz

Let the destruction of my lineup commence.............

Rocco saw the light and renounced his past as an obnoxious talk radio provocateur. He wrote a book about his transformation, which you can find on amazon.

Tunch and Wolf are good together. They have a natural chemistry. I think Madden's act is pretty well fried in Pittsburgh. He has the kind of act where he should hit a new market about every four years so he could have an impact. Once you've heard him call everyone a jackass, what is there? It's not like he keeps it fresh with comedy material or song parodies or a group of helpers. It's basically him with the same complaints and the same wrestling catchphrases over and over.

I was under the impression that Pendola had turned over a new leaf, though I didn't know he wrote a book about it, I may want to check that out. I want to say he was in school in California for public policy or urban planning, but I may be mistaken. I visited his blog page a while back, but for the life of me I can't recall the address off of the top of my head.

I also would tend to agre with your assessment of Madden from a personal standpoint, but for whatever reason, there are a decent size number of listeners in the talk formats that tend to like to listen to the radio just to be angry. Personally I have never gotten it (despite working in the field), I just never understood why people would listen to their radio just to be angry. That being said, if it works (and maybe it doesn't for Mark anymore, I haven't looked at the numbers for his particular daypart broken down by demographic) no need for me to reinvent the wheel, just understand that it turns and be content with that knowledge.

I too like Tunch and Wolf together, almost a local Mike and Mike, but a little more tolerable for my tastes. Not that Mike and Mike are bad, just like Tunch and Wolf better.

I threw the Cannon brothers in there at that time slot because they strike me as probably the best at handling updates as they come in, and in that slot is when you are going to get most of your score updates both locally and nationally. I may be mistaken, there may be better in the market in that role, but they strike me best as being able to handle it, though I would mind having Jim Colony do the actual sports/news breaks during that show.
