Dream Station

You have $100,000,000.00 dollars. All of your debts are paid, family members paid off, charities and churches have been granted.
What kind of radio station would you open for funsies?

I would want a 100,000 watt FM with all equipment brand new and selected by CCENG. I might even have some old style studios with cart machines and rotary pots on the board!
I'd round up some of my old jocks, friends and former employees, and pay the ones who had been working in the pits a living wage and offer the same to those between gigs. It would be all personality radio all the time and I'd PD when I felt like it.
We'd sell time but it would be limited to maybe six minutes per hour and expensive. 90% of the price would go to local charities (band boosters, humane society, meals on wheels, etc) and ten percent for beer and floats for the pool out back.
The format would be based on the jocks. If I ever did the morning side-kick deal with anyone we'd do early-mid 80's top 40.

Any other dreamers out there?

Jenny --- at least you're off the AM (THANK GOD!)

I'll play - If it had to be along PCB it would have to be The Great 108 / WPFM. Would that surprise anyone?
Could I rebuild the Miracle Strip Amusement Park (especially the Haunted House & Flume Ride and Roller Coaster)
with the $100M. It would be cool to do alot of the mid 80's stuff with 90 and today in there, but I'd wanna
reach a demo that may have remembered the heyday. I'd gold plate Charlie's mug, so we'd have to get
a lot of free beer donated along with the 10% to make end meet. I could stand to loose 20 years and
30 pounds. Nah, make that 50, so I can put some of them back on from the beer.

Couldn't really talk me into anything else there. Sometimes I sort of still feel like I still somehow "owe it" to the spirit
that has never gone away from The Great 108 to make it great again. I think lots of others would agree.

I think 98-1 with it's mega signal in FWB would be #2. Again nostalgia. I might simultcast the two just for
kicks.

Jen, I think you've nailed it. Can I be Tibbs' sidekick? Can we have the mid-day shift (sleep late & leave early)? Can I trade out one of those new beachfront condos at PCB?

Mr. Redneck, sir....
With all of the due respect I have for you, I speak for a couple others when I say we would prefer you to reincarnate a certain other station where I cut my teeth. Just sayin'....in case you hit the numbers, we would appreciate your consideration.
Thank you.
Hope you are very well indeed.

RNR --- in a heartbeat. I've always said, I'd do it for free for six months to prove the ratings and success.
You know we could do it! I agree with you on the middays, although 10AM comes around pretty early down there.

Moonshawdow --- I get your point. It's 100M, and why not throw that in on the game. But ya gotta give
RNR and me a chance at 'PFM. We've been salvating over that on here for a couple of years...

Maybe we could buy rob to move the signals together at 107.650 with a couple of hundred thousand watts
and pretty tower lights.

In a lot of ways I suppose the Great 108 in the eighties... & New Rock One Zero Seven in the nineties... WERE "Dream Stations."

Let's get a waiver from the FAA to build a 2,000 foot stick at Destin and put 98.1, 107.3 & 107.9 up there and slap Classic Rock, Alternative & CHR on them babies. I'll play the GM role (sipping Absolut tonics all day at Juana's Pagodas at Navarre Beach), Moonshadow can program New Rock & Tibbs can play with 98 & 108. I don't think we'd have too much trouble finding a killer staff to join the fun...

RNR --- maybe we should call it call it Absolute Rock ... I like you're style, but remember never before
10AM...except weekdays, weekends and holidays.

CJ Whitmore did mornings at 98one in the day. Wonder what ever happened to Z-Man in the afternoon???
That would be fun to re-invent that era! Good, obscure Classic Rock, not the 112 stale Segar, John,
Foreigner overplays...CJ??? You remember any of those great tunes from 98one? I have lost the playlist.

Think while we're all at it, we could just buy all the stations and make everbody else Country? Except of
course for Z-ROCK...

That project is worth keeping around for entertainment value alone.

You should save room for WAAZ on that 2000 foot tower. No reason to mess with it's current format or programming, unless you could simulcast WZEW between Midnight and 5AM.

Right on Poledo!!!
Oh, man, I thought about just that -- putting WAAZ/Mr. W in on the post for the country format....

I can hear it now....

"------, why in the HELL would I want to be on 72 stations down on those crazy damn beaches?"

You guys will appreciate this, especially if you read the posts of the AL board about Tragic Broadcasting last week,
but in the 80's up through the 90's Mr. Whitaker had a CP for 50kw and he could have cared a less to use it.
In fact, he rode it to the last minute before it expired.

"Why do I need 50,000 watts? I cover Crestview fine with 3,000 watts. It's a waste of electricity."

I could only imagine the look on his face...

"What and why do I need 17,575,500 combined watts of all those damn stations?" And he would know exactly
all the total power of every station along 98.

We'd have to simultcast him on all the stations a weekly interview about the way the world is ... he straighten
things out pretty quickly, wouldn't he???

Charlie, you have any thoughts about what you'd pick as the "I have a dream?"

I like the idea of reviving The Great 108! That was the one in the flying-saucer -onna stick building, right?
Yes, with that much money you could rebuild Miracle Strip AND Petticoat Junction. And condos for the jocks would be a given.
We'd have a monster Winnebago fitted out luxury-style to use for concerts we wanted to see and for when we just wanted to jerk the competition around ;D
Hey, and you know what? It would be great to hire local kids to work the amusement parks and provide transportation. I know one young couple who met while working at Miracle Strip as teens. They are married and expecting their first child now.
Funny how a "wish" radio station starts to flow across the community....

How bout a station where the jocks didn't read liner cards at the end of the stopset, Actually talked to the post on songs. Took phone calls on the air (yes I know you need permission from the listener.)

The only station I can think of that the jocks can actually Ad-lib is Magic 106 Pensacola. The jocks sound like they are having fun, they talk to you, and you know someone is in the studio.

If the jock is not going to be allowed to have a personality. You might as well do a WAVH 106 the pirate. No announcers just music, but you gotta hand it to them, pretty good ratings in the last book. Maybe we don't need jocks.

I think the reason 98.1 and the great 108 were so popular is not because of the music, but the people who sounded energized and alive on the air.

I have never seen the WAAZ studio, but I'm gonna go out on the limb and say the console is a gates (maybe mono) because there isn't a FM studio (they still use the original AM). The production library tanner, and the mic might of been updated sometime in the 70's because the old one finally fell apart. The music is played on a Harris 90 with Scullys. and the announcers have been there forever..They probably shut things down at midnight too. If I lived in Crestview, I would probably apply for a job there. I would be nice to have a cup of coffee at this station, spin a record, read news from the wire, and ad-lib a local commercial. Man, I miss that :( Sadly most new radio people will never get to experience this. To me this would be the best on the job training, and I would say to anyone who is just starting in radio to find a station like this one, a station where you will need to plan out every element that goes on the instead of hitting the F3 computer on the Keyboard and letting the audiovault do the job.

Sorry to ramble...I thought this was a good post created :)

forgive me, but I'm new to the area--how powerful was WPFM when they were on that? why did they put it there to waste half their signal into the gulf?

Ya'll might want to check out the Eastern NC Board..Some of us are having a pretty good time listing records we think should be played on a "Dream Station" APE!

PFM's tower has always been about 25 miles inland (the channel 7 tower at US231 and SR20)...they have always been 100kw...they signed on in the early/mid 60's and were the first full time FM station in Panama City (before I get corrected, WDLP-FM was on the air in the fifties but they signed off after a year or so)...when PFM (then WMAI) signed on, the local airport VOR was on 108.1....none of the VORs in the aircraft would work properly and the FAA had to move the VOR to another frequency...it was too close to the 100kw signal of 107.9....the reason 107.9 was put on the air was to distribute Muzak on the 67 khz subcarrier....remember this was when hardly no one had an FM radio in the house-much less in their car.

Ya got any pictures of the PFM tower, Charlie? I think I'd frame it and give it out for Christmas presents to
a bunch of folks on here. Yes, Christmas. It's almost here. BTW, I wanna be the first person to ask who thinks who
will flip to it and when...

Let's keep the post alive. I'll send my list to Charlie for safe keeping and see if anyone overlaps....ROCK ON WPFM!!!

10 Songs you'd play on THE GREAT 108???

Spring break trips, beer on ice the night before, 2 coolers to get to the beach, could just start getting PFM about Enterprise and it was like a homing beacon. By the time we rolled onto the beach, stop one was McDonalds to pee and get a burger, stop two-PFM studios! Every year for three straight, 6 guys (many sheets to the wind) showed up and they let us in the studios! Stop three, the motel. Remember those crappy little transistors we had on the beach to listen with? Didn't their logo once upon a time comprise of 3 overlapping different sized and colored circles?

Ten songs, Freak Out, Ring My Bell, Knock On Wood-remember when Spinniker was a little bitty thing and you got that bucket of beer with the little plastic cups-, Come Sail Away, As Time Goes By, Tequila Sunrise, Beautiful Girls, Runnin' With The Devil, Back in Black and Don't Fear The Reaper. Ten's not enough, haven't even gotten to any Hank Jr. or Waylon. Oh oh, can't forget about the Andrea True Connection, Wild Cherry, Kiss and of course KC and the Sunshine Band.

Good songs are playing in my head now, THANK YOU!

Here's a promise Jenny, if I win the lottery I'll do it!

I'll hold you to that, Stewy :)
I'm thinking Walter Eagen - Magnet and Steel, Lipps,Inc. - Funky Town, Commodores - Brick House, Steely Dan - Josie, Deacon Blues, pretty much all of AJA, Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London, Randy Newman - 1927, and a ton of mid-charters I can't remember right now. Plus all of the Becker and Fagen (Steely Dan) solo albums.
Fun! And let's give away T-shirts and coozies and tons of stuff. Nobody much seems to give things away any more....
