Drew Carey may be the new "Price" host

Steve Beverly's website, www.tvgameshows.net,
has a report from Daily Variety that Drew Carey
may be close to a deal to host "The Price Is Right."
CBS admits having had discussions with him, although
it's possible they may see how viewers react to him
and his new show "Power Of 10." Problem is, taping
for season 36 starts August 25.

CBS apparently feels the name recognition is in
his favor; of all the other candidates seriously considered,
only John O'Hurley ("Family Feud") came close (apparently,
George Hamilton wasn't too seriously considered, and
Rosie O'Donnell definitely wasn't).

Of course, Carey does have hosting experience ("Whose
Line Is It Anyway?").

(I can't help thinking about Carey's resemblance to the
original "Price" host, Bill Cullen, with about 100 pounds
added on. :D)

Thoughts?

I think Drew Carey might be the right guy to host "The Price is Right", but I wonder how did Mark Steines, Mark Walberg & Todd Newton all fared out with the audience? And I what kind reaction will viewers get after they see Drew hosts the upcoming game show "Power of 10"? If Carey gets the job on "TPIR", I hope Steines or Newton will become the new host of "The Power of 10" if it gets picked up by CBS.

There is no reason that Drew couldn't host both The Price Is Right and The Power of 10 at the same time if The Power of 10 makes it unto CBS's fall schedule. I'm beginning to feel like the producers of The Price Is Right are headed in the right direction with this move.

So August 25th will be the first taping of the 36th season of The Price Is Right which means we will finally get to learn if Drew gets the job by the 2nd week of August at best. When would The Price Is Right start its 36th season? I know in the past they started the season the 3rd Monday in September so possibly since taping will be August 25th, I'm figuring that the first Monday in October would be the start of the 36th season.

I thought I had read somewhere that because of the search for a new host that the beginning of season 36 may be pushed back, even before the possibility of Drew Carey was brought up.

I had been for Todd Newton out of the serious candidates, but since Drew Carey is seriously being considered now that would be OK with me. Just don't try to use anyone from Whose Line as the new models. ;D

I'd had the same thought that if someone from the 50's had traveled in time to 2008 and saw Drew Carey as the host of The Price is Right, their first thought might be "WOW Bill Cullen's put on weight!" ;D

The Bill Cullen comment was funny. I think Drew would be a great host for the show. He's got a great personality, he's funny, and good with people. I think He's the best choice I've heard out of all the people mentioned so far.

Couldn't agree more. He's probably the most likely to keep the audience laughing and the games moving without batting an eye.

I saw a commercial for Power of 10 and said to myself, "Drew Carey might end up hosting The Price is Right". In fact I was going to post here about that thought just now. Isn't it a small world? I think he'd do a great job!

If CBS were the owner of GSN, Todd Newton would get better attention...right?

I'd much prefer to see Mr. Newton as the new host of Price is Right.

"Game show fans know Todd Newton as the host of GSN's "Whammy," "Gameshow Marathon," "Performing As," "Hollywood Showdown," "Instant Millionaire" and "The Price Is Right Live,""

I think you said that on another post so I suppose I'm guilty of stealing from you,
even though it's the truth. I'm reminded, too, of Steve Beverly's remark about a
Sunday night a few years back when he and his daughter were watching an episode
of the Cullen "Price" on GSN's "Sunday Night in Black and White." She wasn't familiar with Cullen and, according to Beverly, she turned to him and asked, "Is that that Drew Carey guy?"

Seriously, I think there's a lot of sentiment for Carey to get the "Price" job. The last thing the show needs is somebody doing Bob Barker, but instead somebody who does it in his (and I'm quite certain it will be a male) own style. Drew can do that.

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I am a bit surprised at how much trouble CBS has seemingly had with their search for a new host. I can't believe how many names have been thrown around, and it sounds like the producers have been quite busy over the last few months. I guess it's a good thing that they are taking their time in order to find the right one.

I think Drew Carey would do a decent job as host. However, there might be somewhat of a burnout factor if in fact CBS does pick up "Power" for the fall/spring. Maybe Drew was one of their top contenders right after he was picked to host this new show, and I'm sure "Price" producers have gone to some of the "Power" tapings and have liked what they've seen from him.

Wow, Craig Ferguson for LATE LATE SHOW, Carey for TPIR....
What's next, Kathy Kinney as a co-host on CBS This Morning?

I really don't have a problem with Drew doing Price. He might be pretty darn good, and he's already made it known he would treat the show with respect.

Hey, I'd like Todd to get the gig as much as the next person, but the reality is two things hurt him.
1) He's not known by people at large.
2) I think FremantleMedia thinks he'll be better served with the stage show, as it is quite the revenue generator for Fremantle and Harrah's.

I think the problem here is obvious. Bob Barker has hosted this
show for 35 years. A generation has grown up associating him
with the show. There is no time gap, as it was between the last
Cullen "Price" (1965) and Barker's debut as "Price" host (1972),
nor is there a significant change in format as there was between
the two versions of "Price." So it's important to find a host who
can hold the existing audience and, hopefully, add to it.

Most of you don't remember Woody Woodbury. He was Johnny
Carson's replacement on "Who Do You Trust?" in 1962, and was so
bad that what had been one of ABC's two highest-rated daytime shows
("American Bandstand" was the other) was gone in little over a year,
and Woodbury never hosted another game show. That is almost a
benchmark for how replacing an established game-show host can
backfire. CBS and Fremantle (and for once, Fremantle is doing something smart) are doing the right thing by taking their time, so that "Price" doesn't
suffer the same disastrous fate.
