Drew Carey to Host "The Price is Right"

Todd Newton was my first choice, but Drew Carey should be a very good option. Now, if only the "That isn't how BOB did it" contingent will give him a chance to get comfortable and make the show his own, it could work quite nicely.

Your new TPIR host will be on Letterman tonight. Just saw a preview saying that Drew Carey would have a big announcement on the show. A quick search on google news confirmed it.

Could a better decision have been made? Time will only tell, but I'm guessing they could have done much worse. If this version fails, I doubt it will be because of Carey but because people won't settle for anything less than Bob Barker.

Personally, I was hoping for John O"Hurley or Todd Newton but perhaps it was thought those two individuals should stick with their current jobs.

Not a ringing endorsement for Drew, saying that "they could have done much worse," but that's the kind of guy I also personally view him to be...not anybody to make me say, "WOW, great choice!", but also not anybody to make me say, "Man, I would've never chosen him."

GIVE 11AM-12NOON EASTERN BACK TO THE AFFILIATES!

For what? More syndicated court shows and trash talk? Very few stations would be willing to do an AM Buffalo type of show in its place.

I'm not familiar with most of the candidates, but I think Drew Carey is a good choice. I just hope the ratings agree. And if not, then there should be a new game show in its place (or two half-hour games). Perhaps revivals of Card Sharks and the $25,000 Pyramid.

What I see as the upside is you have someone with a degree of name recognition, but not so much that they overpower the show. Some people simply won't get over Bob not being the host. So be it. But if you step back and analyze it objectively, the biggest "star" of the show is the contestants. Bob kept the proceedings moving and used his humor to bring out the natural appeal of the players. Drew is one of the names mentioned who has a track record of doing that himself--the sitcom often played up the supporting cast while he reacted to them, and on Whose Line he was pretty much a traffic cop to the improv, as it should have been.

He's an "everyday" kind of guy, which works better for this particular show than having the "BIG NAME" detract from the fun of the game itself.

Personally, I think it's a great decision. Drew is different enough from Bob as to not draw comparisons. I don't think viewers would buy John O'Hurley. Hopefully, they will overhaul the show and make it Drew's version. Not the Bob Barker version with Drew Carey as host.

The choice of Drew Carey makes it look as though TPIR is coming full circle. Drew looks like an overweight version of Bill Cullen, who was the original host of both the daytime and nighttime versions of the show for 9 years. Drew's a personable, witty guy who should do all right for himself. I wish him well in his new position...

But will they have enough time to overhaul it? There's roughly one month between now and the first tape date.

I wouldn't do a whole lot...might try to get rid of some of the glitter on the Price set and bring it into the 90s. And they should be able to do that in a month.

Do as most games shows do, make a few minor changes each season. If you look at Jeopardy! (The Trebek version) from 1983 it looks radically different from the 2007 version, however this is due to minor changes each season rather than a sweeping dramatic change. (Other than the dollar amounts)

Drew is a funny man and I like him as a comic, but I'm not sure that a comic is what is needed as a host. This really changes the dynamic of the show. Bob Barker was the host but the "STAR" of the show was really the contestant and the people with Bob "guiding" them.

I am wondering if having an established successful comic, like Carey will change the show into him with no emphasis on the game itself and the contestants.

I don't think so. Look at Richard Dawson with Family Feud.

But Richard Dawson wasn't a well known stand up comedian and star of his own long running series. He was a third level player in a show that was only a moderate success. He was still not known nearly as well. Dawson came into his big fame as a host, though he had moderate success earlier.

But in the world of game show fans, Richard Dawson was very popular on Match Game. It was his popularity on Match Game that landed him the job at FF. He was definitely well-known. Slightly off-topic, go to You Tube and search Family Feud. The blooper and "dumbest contestants ever" videos are laugh-out-loud funny with Richard as host.

Back to topic...I think CBS has made a great choice in Drew. Todd Newton is a little too "game show host" for TPIR. Drew will be more personable with the contestants; much like Bob was.
