Drew Carey/ TPIR

It almost looks as if his pocket is sewn shut. He was always putting his left hand in and out
of it.
He's gotten a bit better on the show, he just misses a lot of (insert funny line) that Bob was so
good at.

I've noticed that Drew Carey no longer wears a necktie on The Price Is Right. What's with that?

Budget cuts.

Well, when you replace the consummate game show host with a clownish comedian, what do you expect? ;)
Drew Carey took over as host of Price about the same time that Katie Couric took over as anchor on CBS evening news. He is still there; she has moved on, so he must be doing something right.

That said, I haven't watched Price in years, so I can't really comment on it.

Two reasons Drew Carey continues on TPIR, even if some folks miss Bob Barker...

1)The Neilsen ratings have held up well

2)A lot more people in prime demos advertisers want to reach, relate to him (he is 35 years younger than Barker)

^Drew Carey is actually younger than Bob Barker by 34 years at this point in time. Their ages would actually differ by 35 years by the time of Bob Barker's 89th birthday on December 12th this year (Drew Carey's 54th birthday was on May 23rd). Coincidentally the number 35 applies to the number of series (or seasons) for the current version of "The Price is Right" for which Bob Barker was host.

But whenever I see TPIR I still frequently see all the Scooter Store, Hoverround, Medicare, pharmaceutical ads, etc. that are geared toward the elderly, rather than "prime demo" ads.

I'm sick of seeing htose ads. But they must be working.

I've wondered about the demographics. It seems TPIR attracts a lot of College aged kids. But yet, the ads are aimed directly to the elderly.

I'm 31--far from elderly--and I have a power wheelchair... from The Scooter Store. There are a lot of disabled people of all ages watching daytime television.

You know something I noticed the same thing. The show attracts the college crowd into 20's while the ad's do target elderly. Maybe the college kids are buying hovarounds for thier Grandparents

There was another thread on TPIR in the past year. Some of the same themes there. Scooter store, etc.

I actually like Drew, he is warm and comfortable, and that is what this show requires. Yes, he cracks up at things that are not that funny, but I will give him a break on that.

The show itself is trying some new ideas (bringing on soap actors, doing themed shows, etc.) and that helps but the show is still at its best with the big money games, Plinko, "A New Car", and other chances where the contestant can win big. The showcase still has a great appeal, and many will watch to the end for that. I am not surprised this show continues to score well in the ratings. It is beyond any doubt, the most popular game show on TV today. Drew helps this cause, IMO.

And just today (6/8), they debuted a new pricing game: Double Cross. A few weeks earlier, Barker's Bargain Bar returned as Bargain Game.

That game, Gas Money, Pay The Rent, Rat Race, the revamped Temptation, George Gray's announce podium, and the Showcase/Contestants' Row readouts are all monitor-based; if Bob was still hosting today, he would NEVER let those fly!

^I guess Bob Barker would have found the idea of changing those games in order to add monitors unnecessary. Some things are best left alone if there is nothing to improve (I haven't watched an entire show since the first new edition in September 2009; it had changed too much for me by that point and it was not getting better).

I still believe production on the show should have ended after Bob Barker retired before resuming five years later. In the meantime past editions of the program could have been broadcast or a new game show or two could have been broadcast in the same timeslot. If one or both of the new game shows were to be successful, one or both could have been sold to local TV stations through broadcast syndication.

If production of "The Price is Right" had resumed five years after Bob Barker's retirement, more people probably would have accepted the big changes to the show such as the changes introduced after Drew Carey became the host. They would have accepted the program like the folks who accepted it shortly after it began in 1972 seven years after the end of the original version with Bill Cullen as host.

I'll admit I've never been a big TPIR fan, but I'd rather see it stay on than go back to local time that would likely end up with more trash talk, courtroom shows, or infomercials. It's apparently still doing well enough with Drew Carey as the host that CBS is satisfied and not looking to drop it in the near future.

Nielsen doesn't measure college dorms but do they measure retirement homes?

Oh, and in case you've noticed in the last few weeks, contestants not appearing on stage now receive cash as a consolation prize.

Also, they have allowed former contestants from the Barker era to return, which reminds me...whatever happened to Yolanda Bowersley (you know, the lady who gave more than an eyeful when she came on down)?
