RADIO BATTLE GETS PHYSICAL
Scott Maxwell

The battle between Orlando's morning-radio shows turned physical this past weekend, when one of 104.1 FM's Monsters in the Morning rushed a stage on Church Street, leaving 105.9's Drew Garabo with a bloody face and broken nose.

Blackbean, whose real name is Carlos Navarro, was charged with simple battery, according to a charging affidavit from the Orlando Police Department.

In the report, the arresting officer wrote that Navarro "punched the victim with [his] right fist to the victim's face."

Translated Garabo: "He broke my nose."

Garabo, who said he spent early Saturday in the emergency room, said the incident was as surprising as it was embarrassing. He said he barely had time to see Navarro coming toward him before he got "sucker-punched."

"Getting knocked out in front of 500 people is not my idea of fun on St. Patrick's Day," he said.

Navarro couldn't be reached for comment. But according to the police report, he told the officer: "I'm sorry, but that guy called my girlfriend a [expletive]."

Monsters show leader Russ Rollins said Monday that Garabo had referred to Rollins' fiancee in the same unflattering way, saying in an e-mail: "Drew has made it his mission to say many derogatory things about all of us on the Monsters and the station . . . he's tried his best to get a rise out of us."

Garabo was part of the 104.1 family until last year, when the station fired him. After about a year's hiatus, 105.9 hired him to fill the morning hours that Howard Stern was vacating.

As for the accusation that he had been trying to provoke Blackbean or any of the Monsters, Garabo simply said, "No comment."

He disrespected my girl, so I can assault him. Classic bonehead thug-logic.

Clear Channel must be proud.

I think they were both pretty stupid here... but how does one get sucker punched when the one who is punching you has to come up on to a stage to do it? My definition of a sucker punch is when you don't see it coming.

How can you not see Blackbeen coming towards you on a stage?

In general, another statement as to the depths to which the business has sunk.<P ID="signature">______________

i don't think anyone who is involved in a public appearance on a public stage expects to get punched. Even if Drew saw Blackbean coming, he probably didn't see that a fist to the face was coming along with him.

Drew's sister is an attorney. Doubt Blackbean has any bucks in the bank, but Clear Channel would hate it if there was a lien put against his paycheck.

Eh, it was a stupid move on BB's part, but seriously who cares? I dont see any problem with making it (painfully) clear to someone that saying things like that is not ok.

Im sure Drew didn't learn a thing but i think an angel might have gotten wings when that punch landed.

I doubt CC is all that worried about it, this is fantastic hype for both shows.

Assault is a crime. "Saying things" is not.

You're absolutely right, and your statement speaks volumes about the depths to which radio has sunk.

> Are you serious?? You actually believe that BB was justified going on stage while he was working, BB needs to grow up!!! By his mug shot he looks a few years out of high school why doesn't he act like it. BB is alleging Drew said something about his girl.. so what!!Is she a [expletive]??? Well for his sake I hope that he remembers that moment for a long time (even though it has been said that he was very intoxicated)because at this point I feel that incident is going to follow him around for a long time..Drew may have had his nose broke and his pride shattered but a big fat check I'm sure will help heal those wounds.

What was Blackbean doing drunk at that O-Rock show/promotion anyway. Was he simply there as a fan or to cause trouble? I'm gonna guess the latter.... ;-) Bottom line... Everyone is a fault somewhere here and the managers in Orlando radio are the biggest losers. Grow up and get a handle on your staffs.

> Word on the street is...so take it for what it's worth The Monsters were kicked out of their own event for being intoxicated. I don't think the managers are the losers here...it's the personalities themselves..these guys and girls should have control over themselves.. There are other ways to "beat" your competitor..Here's a thought... more interesting radio and let numbers do the talking and leave the "I'll get you at recess" to the school kids.
