Drifting satellite threatens US cable programming

The sat guys are saying AMC 11 is being moved to the far side of its "operational box" to put as much distance between the two birds as possible. The distance is described as something like 60 miles.

Looks like, at some point, interference is unavoidable.

Looks like Pay-Per-View, A&E, Lifetime, Hallmark Channel, Showtime, several NBC Universal (including The Weather Channel) and all of the Viacom, Discovery, Comcast, and Scripps networks are involved. QVC is also on the list.

This could be a huge problem. Do any of these cable networks have back-up arrangements in place in case of something like this?

I love the nickname they have given to Galaxy 15: "Zombie Satellite"

Awesome name!

When Galaxy 15 got fried, most of the Turner channels got moved to Galaxy 12; I'm very interested in seeing what happens with this satellite.

Most any satellite-dependent enterprise has a back-up plan.

From the radio side, when a solar panel failed on the AMC-8 bird, the major syndicators told their affiliates that the backup bird was AMC-7 on a certain transponder. This was several years ago (perhaps 2006), and nothing has happened yet.

Of course, the problem described here is different than AMC-8.

If Galaxy 15 has an on board camera, send down the pictures from that.
It would 100x more interesting than any programming up-linked to it.

Yeah, the WeatherChannel isn't what it used to be, but they still do a good job of covering tornado outbreaks..except during their Friday night movies.

Incidentally, Weather Channel is the only FM-based transponder still operating on AMC11! All the rest have either gone to DVB or Digicipher 2.
