Drive Throughs use FM radios to take orders?

Unknowable

Earlier today I was in the drive through at the Freddy's in North Central SA on San Pedro, getting some food and tuning around. I picked up their drive through station transmitting audio from the orders on 93.9. Have a listen, the signal faded as I left the drive through, so it's gotta be really weak. The talking is also very quiet so you will probably have to turn your volume up. It cuts out occasionally, and when it does a loud blast of static comes through, so be warned LOL.

By the way they have great burgers. You guys should try it if you're in the area.

We had drive-in movie theaters a decade or two ago that used some sort of wireless speaker system that was received in your car through FM. Is there a channel reserved for that type of use?

There is no reserved channel for such things. The drive-in theaters were operating as Part 15 FM stations.

The drive-thrus primarily use the 900 MHz unlicensed band, or some kind of hard-wired audio.

Actually, a lot of chains like Burger King, McDs, etc use licensed and unlicensed VHF and UHF systems.....the DOT freqs (154.xx) are popular...usually its a crossband system...UHF between belt systems and out to the spkr...VHF back from the drive up spkr.....(used to use VHF Hiband/lowband crossband systems). If you search the FCC ULS, you will find a lot of 2watt UHF channels with BK, McDs, Jack in the BOX and others as licensees...

900 is not used AFAIK....hard wired wont work due to the mobility of the order taker, etc
