Drivel

driv·el/ˈdrivəl/ Noun:
1. Silly nonsense

2. Content of the Ross & Burbank show on KIRO-FM. Increasingly inane filler and triviality of little or no consequence, not worth the time of the listener. Babble.

Dave Ross, a heavy-hitter with intellect, an Ivy League education and political savvy (he ran for Congress) reduced to talking about matters in which he obviously has little or zero interest, in an attempt to lower himself to the less lofty level of Burbank.

You can almost hear his embarrassment & flop sweat through the radio.

Maybe you folks caught Brian Williams on Daily Show (J. Stewart) last week. Stewart asking why media won't put some substance in their political coverage .... and Williams explaining (among other things) it's because parties are retreating to "no message" safety zones, and any kind of depth is a big tune-out. Between that and the comments above (not to mention our ongoing discussions about lowest common denominator in music programming) .... are you really SURPRISED we have some 300 million (plus) IDIOTS in our borders?

Wrench - Awhile back I was ridiculing the mighty KIRO for even putting Burbank on the air, period. Now it's even worse. He may be a nice guy, fun to hang with but is as close to useless as I've ever heard. To partner him with Ross will be remembered as a huge blunder and I'll bet Ross is reconsidering his options at this point.

Even the promo photos make them look like Mutt & Jeff or a dad and his kid. Over the years, we've all seen station after station after station chip away at themselves. Who needs competition???

Sounds like talk stations have the same consultants as classic hits stations and they all have the same consultants at TV news operations.

Luke Burbank has managed to bamboozle Bonneville for years now. Pairing with him was NOT Dave Ross's idea.

Acknowledging that I may be one of the harshest critics on this board, I find that I'm enjoying the Ross and Burbank pairing. I even make a point to listen to them at 9am until I get to work. They actually have a good rapport, and are each relaxed and comfortable enough with each other that their occasional ribbing comes off as gentle teasing, not passive aggressive power plays.
Sorry, guys, but I think whomever came up with the idea of pairing them up either lucked out, or knew what they were trying for. I'm surprised they haven't tried to pair up Dorey Monsoon (intentional misspelling) with anyone. Might keep him from sneering and shouting as much. (For me, everything from Noon onward on KIRO-FM turns me off, and the late afternoon/evening shows have gotten so fluffy and trite, that they're beyond what I find entertaining or fun to listen to. Might want to rename it "OMG Radio!"

Ok, allow me to pile on: I've always thought that if KIRO wished to commit broadcast suicide and sanitize the airwaves before bringing out a total format overhaul, the could pair up Bill Radke and Luke Burbank and give them a six hour 9-3 mid day shift. Both very nice people I'm sure and perhaps talented in some category (I've heard that Radke does a decent stand-up) but between the two of them, the droning and point-counter-point would kill off listeners in droves. At least Dave Ross seems to know when to yank Luke back and go to a break.

I'm with wonderful wino. It's not personal. I'll wager Burbank is a decent guy, fun to go out with for beer, pizza and radio stories. But the man-child radio act is like some twisted version of Radio Disney and he is - for me, at least - nearly unlistenable. Goldilocks proves that personal preference is a tough thing to nail down. I've gone against the grain with things I've found enjoyable. But for now, in this space, I'm with the majority - KIRO-FM is messed up. And I just can't fathom Dave Ross saying "Hey, great!" when he heard of plans to pair him with a gone-to-seed Wally Cleaver ...
