Driving Through Mississippi

I'll be driving the full length of the state on I-55 on my way to New Orleans. From Memphis to McComb, where are some good local radio stations I can tune into along the way?

Depends on your definition of "good", too. If you're looking for fine examples of small town radio you'll find it all over the dial. But it's definitely a different world from major markets, with the only thing in common being the music all comes off satellite these days at many stations.

As a classic rock and oldies fan, I've always liked Z-106.7 from Jackson, which you should be able to get from Winona on down to well south of Jackson. 105.1 in Jackson is also pretty unique but not as oldies-centric as they used to be from what I hear.

Frankly, when travelling through the state my radio was most often tuned to MPB, public radio. They run a great state net, all in HD with pretty reliable reception in my experience.

Ditto on 1400 WJQS. Even though they are jockless, they aren't afraid to play songs from the 50's-70's that were big hits back in the day that most FM oldies stations won't touch with a 10 foot pole. I've heard ABBA songs that aren't "Dancing Queen", 50's doo wop, surfer music, Beetles songs that don't get airplay anymore, obscure "AM Gold" songs from the early and mid 70's and occasional novelty tunes (I even heard "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees.) 105.1 wouldn't touch half of their songs even at gun point

Can't remember when they flipped, but I believe it was in the latter half of last year. It would be my station of choice for oldies music in Jackson.

Not sure which station you refer to as "flipping."

But WJXM (1400AM) ended airing the Music of Your Life and became Oldies 1400 more than a year ago. I would guess that it was in February 2011.

The Music of Your Life is certainly missed. I enjoy the new format, but they play too much Elvis Presley. I like him, but I can't listen for five minutes before the station plays one of his songs, and that is too much - even for Elvis.

WJQS plays one Elvis song each hour. Maybe you're nodding off a bit? ;D

I noticed that a surfer song such as Jan and Dean or the Beach Boys seems to come on right as I'm pulling up in the parking lot at work. so they must be doing that every hour. Just heard "Let it all Hang Out" by the Hombres, haven't heard that one much lately.
As for the format change, they did it on a friday afternoon about a year ago. I was listening to Music of your life and stopped to eat and the format had changed when I got back in car. I can't get them at night but they stream on the internet and with the "tune in" radio app which is on my android tablet.
