Dropkick Murphys fans! Did you see yesterday's Herald? 96.9 WTKK HD 2 is running two days of continuous Dropkick Murphys music. How many songs do they have anyway? The website is www.969irish.com if you don't have an hd radio.

When I was a mere lad, back in the 50s, I remember my Irish uncles talking about a football player named Dropkick Murphy. I don't know if he was from BU, BC, or wherever. I've Googled the name but all I get is the singing group. Does anyone out there know about the football player?

I remember Kenny Casey telling me about how the original Dropkick Murphy ran a pre-detox place and was something of a hard-you-know-what. So I ran a Google search and found the story on-line:

I can't believe how big those guys got... saw them open shows at the Rat years ago. Al Barr, their vocalist, was originally in a band called DVA (Direct Vole Assault) and I have a photo of him in a tie-dye shirt, beret and about 8 earrings.

So it wasn't a football player. That makes sense because both of my Irish uncles had drinking problems. I seem to remember a song about Dropkick Murphy. This would go back to the early 50s. I don't rember any of the words except that one of the lines ended with "Drop Kick Murphy". I was only about 4 or 5.
