Dropouts during Bills game on WGRF/WEDG?

I spent a good chunk of the long drive home from Indiana (don't ask) last evening listening to the Bills-Chargers game on WEDG and WGRF, and it seemed like the audio was dropping out on occasion, especially when Murph's voice got loud (which, of course, was during key plays, not that the Bills had many of those.)

It also seemed like some fairly sloppy board work at what are supposed to be the network's flagship stations - spots were getting cut off and Murph was getting rejoined late out of at least one break that I heard.

I couldn't hear WCMF that far out to see if they were having the same problems.

Anyone else notice anything?<P ID="signature">______________

Bills Broadcast

If it happened after the middle of the second quarter, I can't help you.

At least we won't have to worry about the Bills breaking our hearts in the playoffs this year.

Re: Bills Broadcast

IIRC, I actually did hear a few dropouts myself on WEDG's feed.
I agree with SirRoxalot...if more happened after the 2nd quarter I can't help you. My manager at Delta Sonic turned it off right after it became 35-10...

HOW CAN 97 ROCK SERIOUSLY ANNOUNCE "TURN DOWN YOUR TV, TURN UP THE RADIO" FOR THE BILLS BROADCAST WHEN IT IS NOT SYNCHRONIZED WITH TV (CABLE OR SATELLITE, DOESN'T MATTER!). I'D LOVE TO LISTEN TO MURPH AND ALEX. HAVE ANY SOLUTIONS BEEN ATTEMPTED?!?

Indeed, that has been a problem in the past. But I happened to be listening to Sunday's game on the radio while watching TV, and it seemed to be in sync. Maybe a fraction of a second off, but not enough to make it uncomfortable. There were games earlier this season where Murph was calling an incomplete pass while the TV was showing Losman throwing the ball. That wasn't good. If 97 Rock is going to promote this as an option, they need to make sure their audio is in sync with TV. I would think an obvious solution is for 97 Rock's engineers to set their delay to the one or two seconds it would take to align with the TV picture.

WERE YOU WATCHING ON TV IN THE BFLO AREA...CABLE OR DISH? I THINK PART OF THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE 97 ROCK WANTS PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO THE AUDIO WHILE ATTENDING THE GAME IN-PERSON, AND DUE TO THE FACT TV IS ON DELAY - EITHER ON PURPOSE FOR SECURITY/FCC REASONS, OR BY DEFAULT DUE TO TRANSMISSION DELAY... HERE LIES THE QUANDRY? ** WISH IT COULD BE WORKED OUT...THE CBS COMMENTATORS NORMALLY SUCK.

Alas, 'tis not so easy.

Which TV picture? Live over-the-air analog from WIVB? Over-the-air HD from WIVB-DT, which lags another second or two behind? The cable feed via Adelphia, which has additional transmission delays on both analog and digital? What about my buddy who lives in Alden and gets WIVB via Time Warner Cable, with still more delays as the signal goes to a distant headend (Batavia?) and comes back to him? Or the folks watching on DirecTV or Dish, for whom the signal has to make two satellite hops and be digitally compressed, with even more delay inherent in the process.

Make one of them happy and all the others will be out of sync.

Think that's a mess? Wait 'till HD Radio really enters the picture, with the 8.4 second delay it entails.

The whole concept of "live" is fast going the way of the VHS cassette...it's a complicated, digital world we live in now!

Re: Bills Broadcast

I noticed a difference between 97-Rock and The Edge during the last game. 97-Rock seems delayed, while The Edge seems "live". I don't know if that's intentional or not, or if it has been that way during previous games.

PS - Please turn off your caps lock. On the Internet, it's the equivalent of SHOUTING!

On the Cleveland board, WMMS PD Bo Matthews checked in when a listener asked about the delay present on his station, but not on CC sister talker WTAM, during Browns games. Here's the response, after I speculated on why:

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=592324&Board=cleveland>http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=592324&Board=cleveland</a>

The upshot - WMMS delays to try to match the TV feed during home games, and WTAM stays "live" for those listening at Cleveland Browns Stadium (or people in cars who aren't watching TV, I presume).

But as you note...there are at least 5 or 6 different ways to time with TV, from live analog OTA to satellite digital, with everything in between. And it'll basically become impossible when 'MMS and 'TAM turn on the IBOC.

I've heard talk on the Edge that implies it is the station to listen to inside the stadium for "real time" play by play for fans who are at the game while 97 Rock is promoted as the station to listen to when you "turn down the TV sound" and watch the game on TV.

BTW, what was worse this past weekend: the Bills' lackluster play or Jeff Burris' disjointed commentary and analysis?

Sounds like something may have been <blink>intermittent</blink>...
