Drudge: Franken, the Guest Who Wouldn't Leave

Conservatives across the US would like to thank Franken, Howie Dean, and Michael Moore for helping to re-elect the President. TALKERS honored Franken with its
Freedom of Speech award. Hope this gets shown on C-SPAN!

Al Franken must be a comedian because reading about this sure made me smile.

excerpt:
AIR AMERICA's Al Franken became “The Guest Who Wouldn’t Leave” after receiving an award at a talk-radio convention in New York over the weekend. NY POST's John Mainelli reports Monday: The liberal talk-show host was finally forced off the stage -- amidst shouts from supporters and detractors -- after an acceptance speech became a nearly half-hour rant against Bill O’Reilly and the Iraq war.

Maybe Franken didn't stay long; maybe it just seemed long!

He's a comedian. He's not a good comedian.
He's even worse as a talk show host.
He holds the distinction of being the poorest performer in the history of Saturday Night Live (and there are quite a few contenders for that title).
He is the only person ever to have written a best selling book with a title that sounds like a 4th grader's school yard insult.
Whoever put out the idea Franken is a standard bearer for liberalism made a lot of conservatives very happy.

Liberals, socialists, libertarains, free-thinkers and anybody else who is not a Rush or Liddy fan: DON'T LISTEN TO FRANKEN. Instead, check out Thom Hartmann (12 n to 3 pm ET; online, Sirius or various local stations). Not liking conservative talk radio is not a good enough reason to listen to BAD TALK RADIO.

Wow, as much as all of you conservatives can't *STAND* liberal talk, you sure go out of your way to post each and every article about it, huh?

I love Air America Radio and it and its ilk (Stephanie Miller, et al) must be doing something right. You guys are like caged dogs, frothing at the mouth. Get a new hobby. Liberal talk is here to stay.

As one of the other talkers there shouted while Franken was being razzed, "You just gave him the 'Free Speech' award, not the 'Shut The (BLEEP) Up Award'!"

As Franken tells it, the razzing stopped when his friend G. Gordon Liddy came up and told everyone to "let the man speak."

I suspect that (if C-Span did record it and does broadcast it) we'll all find the real story at some remove from the tale told by the freepers, signifying nothing.<P ID="signature">______________

And just like Franken said today on his radio program, whenever you start stating facts and figures they go running off snorting attacks. They don't want to hear the truth! And, like all good radio propa-republicans, when the truth be told, they ignore the facts and go on the attack. Just like the current administration. Deny and attack. Page one in the republican handbook.

I'm not in least bit surprised. Talkers Magazine is the mouthpiece of Conservative talk radio. Their last two issues featured cover stories about trips to Israel and Iraq financed by right wing causes, which were taken by Conservative talk radio hosts. You've probably heard of the Talkers "Heavy 100." It is an annual tribute to the top 100 talk radio personalities. This year's list, which can be found at http://www.talkers.com/heavy.html, includes 31 new talkers. That means that 31 other talkers were dumped. I found it curious that the newly added talkers only included two liberals – Al Franken and Stephanie Miller. Dropped from the Heavy 100 were Bernie Ward. Mitch Albom, Jim Gearhart, and Diane Rehm. So in the year when Lib Talk has been the hot topic in the talk radio business, the Heavy 100 actually has two fewer liberals than they had last year.

It does not surprise me that Talker's didn't provide a friendly format for Al Franken.

According to the story Al Franken told and G. Gordon Liddy confirmed......there was some badmouthing of al's routine.....he had not been on for 30 mins but in fact about 10 or so mins..plus Liddy and others encouraged Michael Harrison to believe in the free speech he was awarding Franken for supporting......so al got to finish....

You gotta quit quoting Drudge like he is a real journalist rather than a noisemaker....he was not run off the stage but there was some outrage because he commented on the world from the left...not the more common right based on the guests attending

Only because we notice how much the mainstream media tries to build up
liberal talk radio and say how great it's doing--when it really ISN'T.
A truth squad! Check out what <a href="http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com">
Radio Equalizer</a> has to say about this...this was supposed to be a brief
award ceremony, glad-handling, not a big political tirade.

We might be able to stand GOOD liberal talk.

Radio Eq. excerpt:
----------------------------------------------------
"Also, when Michael Harrison first dimmed the lights, you would think he would have gotten the hint. When Michael finally asked him to wrap it up and he kept going, it was painful. The crowd thinned considerably."
(snip)

This programmer, who asked not to be named, was pleased with what happened the next day:

"I did go to the first event the next morning, and Al was on the panel. _Thought he was quite good actually and surprised that after being cut off the night before, he showed up the next day. So I thought that was pretty classy__," the program director indicated.

(see, I included a bit complimentary about Franken. Fair and balanced :) )

as if.... No matter how you slice it, draw it, say it, or play it, Drudge will always get it wrong. The other month he was reporting that Randi Rhodes was being investigated by the Secret Service, which turned out to be a complete fabrication. It always surprises me when those who claim to be media savvy are so inept about who they use as sources for news.

Yeah, Murdoch's NY Post is the BEST choice to go to for news about progressives... only when the Washington Times isn't available I guess. This is the mother of all taffy pulls. As the real story comes out, it turns out he wasn't on stage for a half hour... it was around a dozen minutes. The worst behavior came from the "hot talk" format conservative show hosts in the audience who are used to being able to silence someone with the cut off switch, but having none, they decided to boo and throw papers around instead. This resulted in the other side cheering, and it turned into a cross between the Michael Moore acceptance speech and Prime Minister's Question Time.

G Gordon, who has a personal friendship with Franken, defended him, which caused those unaware of the friendship to do the equivalent of a Scooby "huh?" and then pipe down, confused.

End result - conservatives will say he was booed off the stage and was rude, liberals will say he stood up and dared to question the talking points, and Franken walks away absolutely delighted with all the extra free publicity he got and will get. Smart people in this forum will have already realized that was the plan all along....

The Radio Equalizer was the same guy who was running around saying that Air America's ratings were abysmal in LA during the last book, when anyone who knows anything about the radio business knows a format switch mid-book isn't worth commenting on. He then selectively chose ratings for AA stations that weren't burning up the dial and claimed that represented AA's entire national audience. He's just another conservative who blatantly manipulates facts to fit his world view, so here is another source with an agenda. His views on Franken are already well known... well at least as well known as you can get when he wrote he "loathes him."

BTW, after the Newsweek mess, I thought we weren't using unnamed sources to report news anymore. :)

Our cup runneth over. :)

I never quoted Drudge. I bases my comment on accounts provided to me from the Mainelli artile in the NY Daily News and on observations made to me by people who were there. Also, my comments about Talker's Magazine and the so-called "Heavy 100" are based on objective facts not opinions. Talker's is definately aligned with right wing organizations who support the publication with advertising and other financial support.

Yeah, Radio Equalizer...i.e a right-winger with a website.

Yep. There were probably more people in that audience than listen to his radio show across the country.....

Too bad you have to resort to that to try to get people to listen to your show.

But, hey..thats 21st Century American Radio.

If Hot Air America has to have its stations PAY FOR ITS PROGRAMMING??? NOT A RED SOX FAN'S CHANCE AT YANKEE STADIUM!!!!

That's demonstrably false. Ask O'Reilly.

Does ANYONE know what this guy is talking about? AA does not charge stations to air its programs.

Franken has the video himself now, and played excerpts on his show today.

As I anticipated (and as is all too predictably the case), it shows the real story to be quite different from the lie told by Drudge and the freepers.

Franken said they'll be making the video available at thealfrankenshow.com; until then, you can watch it tonight on Sundance.<P ID="signature">______________
