Drudge: MSNBC may try Smerconish out in Imus slot

Not sure what Westwood One will do as far as radio goes but Drudge is reporting that MSNBC may try
Philly talk host Michael Smerconish out in the Imus slot (maybe they're working with W1 to try him out
in that slot on radio, too?) Someone on Free Republic said Smerconish is a fiscal conservative, social
liberal. Has filled in for O'Reilly's Radio Factor show.

Smerconish has stated that the MSNBC gig is just a temporary thing - probably lasting only a day or two. He has pledged to run his show with all of the ordinary WPHT morning show elements and no changes for TV. On air, he did not seem to think that he was being used as a replacement for Imus and was genuinely surprised to be featured on the Drudge Report today. In fact, he scolded his producer for fooling around when the producer announced it, because he didn't believe it.

The permanence of Smerconish on MSNBC probably depends on how well his show works next week. And, perhaps, MSNBC may even choose to do a "round robin" of sorts between different morning radio talk shows around the country. I think CSPAN did that at one time.

It sounded like Smerconish was trying to downplay expectations. Expect a Philly-centric show on Monday morning. Ironically, Smerconish actually replaced Imus on WPHT - apparently Imus NEVER worked in Philly and was only on because CBS management insisted on it. As soon as there was a management shake-up, Smerconish was moved from afternoons into the morning drive slot.

I'd say he's fiscally conservative and socially moderate. He is not liberal, and he considers himself a Republican. However, he seems to balance both sides very well and is much more even handed than the syndicated hosts that follow during the afternoon. His book, entitled Muzzled, examines how political correctness has limited free speech in America. That's a pet subject of his, and rightfully so. But, it doesn't make his a social conservative either. Again, he's very even handed and has plenty of Democrats as guests on his show. Basically, he seems to represent the moderate Republicans (or Independents) that are common to the Philly suburbs.

Overall, he seems like a pretty good guy - though I can get tired of him now and then. Then again, I am new to Philly and am thus of a different culture. He plays well to the local market, as an insider. I do wonder how well his Eagles segments with Sal Palantonio would do on MSNBC. Something tells me that certain things would have to change for him to permanently replace Imus on TV. He may not care to do it because he's a hometown kind of guy.

I wouldn't think any changes would be needed. I wasn't an Imus viewer, however the few times I did watch, they would often go over a game from the night before that the local NYC teams played, and the one guy often talked about the giants.

...MSNBC thinks Alex Witt and Contessa Brewer would be *less* watchable in the early morning than Smerconish??!? Who the hell is running that place now, anyway? ;D ...

I think Bill Press would be a better, more polished and sensible replacement. Bill can speak to all layers of the political arena plus he has no agenda. I've seen this Smerconsih guy on shows outside the softballs of Chris Matthews and he displays the hot headeness and inability to comprehend/communicate most talk radio host find in moving their "act" to television. Ed Schultz has the same problem.....and Randi Rhodes does as well....Smerconish is not a good choice but Bill Press is....especially with his extensive television experience.

Why Not Just Run News Over A Cable News Network?

Here's an idea. Why doesn't MSNBC just run news during its morning drive? No radio shock jocks, politicial talkers, or book pushers; just news. If MSNBC can't find enough news, perhaps they could air the BBC during the morning instead.

Wow, what a concept. Reporting news on a news channel. How radical.

What next, music videos on MTV?

Not to make this political, but I wonder what shape this country would be in if we just got news and not all opinion. The broadcast networks do some news but also clutter it up with feature crap. As broadcasters we should hold dear our freedom of the press, not use it for ratings but use it for what that right is there for, to keep the government honest and keep the population informed.

Look around,, the govermnemt has run amok, and we are more interested in Sanjaya or "who is the father" than what is happening that is important in our country.

Just a little rant,,, thanks for reading.

I turned on MSNBC this morning to check out this individual. After five minutes the channel was changed to CNN. That was not much of an improvement, but certainly better than what MSNBC had to offer.
