Embattled NBC White House correspondent David Gregory is at the center of a new controversy.
This morning (March 2nd), Gregory was interviewed by phone on Don Imus' talk show (seen on MSNBC and heard on many radio stations across the country). Gregory was in New Delhi, India to cover President Bush's trip there.
According to this partial transcript on Matt Drudge's website, Gregory appeared to sound drunk while being interviewed by Imus, and was uncontrollably laughing.
India is halfway around the world from the United States (it was Thursday evening there), but I feel that if he knew in advance that he would be interviewed by phone for the Imus show, he should not have been drinking prior to the interview. At this writing (12:30 P.M. EST), there was no confirmation that Gregory was drinking although Imus said on-the-air that Gregory was drunk.
I did not hear the show; the only part of the interview I heard was the 25-second excerpt on Drudge's website (and reading the transcript provided on that site).
Still, if Gregory was drunk, should NBC suspend or even terminate him for drinking in advance of being interviewed on-the-air??
