When listening, it seems like some of the crew is phoning it in nowadays. I know call ins dropped to almost nothing for several months, they seem to be picking up now.
Anyone know why the rest of the crew can't take up the slack when Dave is gone? It's always a "best-of" show when he's out. Aren't they capable, or is it a contract thing?

Could be a contract thing. If the "headliner" is out and he/she doesn't want the "brand" mis-used or negatively affected by whoever they could specify "best of" or nada...
Anyone know what's wrong/going on with Dave? They had the PD sitting in for him this week and I just saw on my Twitter feed that Sam the Cooking Guy will be filling in next week.
They've got Larry Himmel on this week, and they've already discussed that Dave Cohen, I believe, will be on next week.
No word on where David is, but I would suspect that if it was good news (like he was on an extended vacation) then we'd know about it (a la Jon Stewart).
But since they're not saying, I'm assuming it's not something good. I'm assuming it has something to do with one of his parents, but that's just a guess. I have absolutely no knowledge, and my one semi-contact on the show isn't saying.
San Diego radio news turns out to be non-existent, still: the leader of a major morning show goes MIA for over a month with no word on why. One alleged SD radio news site got an "exclusive" saying that he'll be back next week, but the same site would not report on earlier info on why the star might be missing. This continues a long tradition of publishing only what the station owners want you to publish and they'll keep inviting you to their parties.
We can only presume it was some sort of a walkout (it was too short of a break for a jail term), otherwise the station would have given some clue to its listeners wondering what the heck happened? There certainly were a lot of DSC fans on Facebook trying to figure out what happened, to no avail.
someone nailed his return date of Sept. 16 all the way back on Sept. 7 at 252p in the comments. Seems like this was a planned layoff and not just a spur of the moment thing. Otherwise how would someone know almost a week ago that he was coming back before it was "officially" announced by the site and Jack via their twitter feed.
Complete foreigner to this situation guys but having read your posts, then checking out the station I think the issue they may have here is a complete lack of, or confidence in, talent to "do their thing" when this guy isn't around. Assuming he's a strong talent from the news it causes when he isn't there - so where is the guy / gal who's going to challenge? Lots of stations in the UK have this issue, and I don't just mean the small broadcasters but the million £ airtime runners also. Wrote a blog on future talent the other week, love to know your thoughts...
I don't think it's a lack of confidence, it's keeping the promise to the audience to deliver what they expect. If you promise a team, deliver a team. Especially when you have a couple decades worth of archives to compile best-of bits, I'd rather hear an old bit than somebody else filling in.
