DSPX - Any presets around?

Hi Everyone,
First post here, we've just installed a DSPX FM at our new studio complex and in all truth I'm yet to be impressed. We're a HOT CHR/Top 40 station in the UK and every preset we've tried seems to be either swimming in treble or distorting crazily when acoustic tracks like Plain White T's come on?

Anyone got any aggressive, punchy settings that sound okay?

Craig

check your email.sent you a couple that should work for you.

Can you fully describe the transmission path setup from mixer to transmitter and where the processor fits in? STL? codecs? make and type of TX etc?
What station?
regards
Scott

Hi Scott,
We've got the DSPX at the studio end feeding an SBS TX400 STL VHF link into a BW 150W TX (that's if my memory serves me correctly)

Pre emph on the DSPX is off as it's enabled on the TX - we've checked deviation levels from our link to ensure that the deviation limiter isn't causing the distortion but that's not the case as we've turned down our DSPX to ensure that.

The station is 107.9 Afan FM - I believe we ordered the DSPX through Preco.

Craig

check your software in the dsp-x, make sure it's running v3.00. Are you running CODED (mp3)audio.? i would only use uncompressed wave files.

That's the problem, or certainly large part of it... You need to let DSPX handle pre-emphasis (as is recommended in the manual ;))

I don't know what your TX uses to handle pre-emphasis (simple limiter/clipper?) but it's certainly not as good as sophisticated multiband pre-emphasis and distortion-controlled clipping that DSPX has, along with tight filtering and MPX generation. Having the pre-emphasis off in the processor and on in the TX is a band-aid solution and (as you noticed) doesn't yield good results. Not to mention competitive.

So do your self a favor, turn off pre-emphasis in the TX and enable it in the DSPX, then re-adjust modulation level.

ditto on using pre-emph in dsp-x.Not familiar with SBS since in the states we are Mosley and Marti users for the most part.wonder if he is using the pre-emph in the xmtr and STL.?if they can be set to zero or flat he should do that.i've seen some boxes where the only choice is 50 or 75 pre-emph.not my cup of tea..

Hey Everyone,
Firstly a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who's emailed me some presets today - we've been playing with them all day and we've found a couple that suit us down the ground! We were on the verge of returning the uni and looking for a new processor until today as this is the first time we've sounded like we've wanted to - so once again thank you.

Now back to the fun technical stuff :)

We're on an analogue link atm which isn't ideal however a shortage of microwave links meant we had to make do until one became available - which we're having installed next week. At the same time, again thanks to your advice, our engineers will allow the DSPX to manage the pre-emphasis :)

If any of you are ever in Wales I'd gladly buy you a beer or two as a means of thanks for your incredible assistance today,

Craig

Great. that's why we have boards like this.lots of processing guru's here, always willing to help.the DSP_X is one heck of a beast and as Goran Tomas says is alot of processing for the bucks and easily beats those costing alot more...Good luck to you.Have fun...

There is not a lot more that I could add because the guys have pretty much explained that you should really avoid pre-emphasing after a processor.
In addition to peak control problems one reason not to do it after an STL is the extra noise you will be adding due to boosting high frequencies. You never did say if it was a multiplex STL or left and right audio. Different configurations would require different advice.
All the best
Scott

Hi everyone,

we're from a local 80's/90's pop station in Belgium and we're using the dspx FM for over a week now and are having the same problem as the Topic starter. Altough we're impressed about the processing itself too bad we still couldn't find the sound we want. We've tried a lot of presets, most of them just sound kinda horrible (to us). We're using the dspx FM standalone, so the sound goes direct from the mixer (D&R Airlab MK2) into the dspx and then it goes into a Siel EXC 305 transmitter via MPX.

Of course we know that it is impossible to create the greatest sound of the world with this basic setup but I'm sure it can sound much better than what we've heard til now. Maybe someone can provide us some nice presets to try out?

P.S. Sorry 'bout my bad english :)

;D Or be smart and buy Orban, or Omnia whatever your flavor is.... ::)

Is that coming from someone who has actually tried DSPX and compared it side-by-side with Orban and Omnia?

What a catty thing to say!
One of the problems with lists like this is that people can hide behind an alias, and say things they never would if they were face-to-face, or simply had to use their real names.

Kind Regards,
David

DITTO David. i have clients using the dsp-x and xtra and really like the sound.Very competitive and lots of bang for the buck.

Same here, really liked the DSPX but LOVE my Xtreme ;D

henrimaximaal is a typical Dutch guy, only eyes for Orban and Omnia but not the ears for the rest. ::)
