DTV in East Texas---another follow-up!

It's been a while since my last posting on my progress with East Texas DTV....and after waiting for a while on some new parts, the card was re-installed and is running great with my indoor Philips antenna with amplifier from Frankston.

All I've been able to recieve is KETK-DT, strangely enough.....with signal strength hovering between 0-30% during the day, and getting as high as 47% at night with a unstable picture, which I've attributed to their low power status and my proximity to their tower. Anyone have any idea when they're supposed to go to full power?

And there's no reception off of KLTV-DT (which I'm not surprising, as I can't even get their regular signal clearly either from their temp tower....anyone have any word on construction of their new tower at Red Springs?)

But what surprises me is not being able to recieve KYTX-DT! I can get the regular analog signal clearly, but when it comes to their DTV signal, no luck! I'll get a trickle of a signal, but not enough to Anyone want to offer any advice on how I can get their signal?

Thanks!

I'd certainly try an outside antenna. I don't think you will wever be happy with any indoor antenna, unless you like looking at a 6 foot long Yagi in your living room. (I know someone who has one, so anything is possible).

I'm in Chalk Hill, about 5 miles east of the Gregg Gounty Airport (East Texas Regional). With an outdoor antenna, I get KLTV-DT with no problem. It registers about 80% signal strength on my receiver. Their analog signal is viewable, but is fairly snowy. KYTX and KYTX-DT come in really well here. No problems with either. KETK-DT is not receivable at all, although their analog signal is OK. Not great, but certainly viewable. Fox 51 is very good in analog, but nonexistent in DT. They broadcast their DT signal off of their STL tower on Access Road in Longview. It is very low to the ground. The antenna is on the wrong side of the tower for me although I'm less than 10 air miles from it. They are constructing their new DTV site in Overton, and should be on the air with it by fall. I don't know what KETK has in mind, but I'll bet we get a DTV signal from KTAL in Texarkana/Shreveport before KETK-DT gets on the air at full power. I'd sure like to have NBC HDTV.

Where I am, Shreveport stations, 3, 12, 21 and 33 all have fine DTV signals. LPB is "iffy" at best. Sometimes I can get it, sometimes I can't. Channel 6, KTAL, is snowy in analog and their digital signal is invisible to me.

You said you live off FM 19, right? The in-town part or down the hill towards Caddo Creek? Have you ever had an external antenna where you are now? Aren't there at least a couple of hills between you and where 19's tower is?

I think there's only a small rise east of town off 175 blocking your line-of-sight for 56's tower, otherwise it should be one of your easier signals.

I haven't seen/heard any progress reports yet on 7's replacement tower or ana/digi reception.

It's too bad you don't have a way to look at the stations with an external antenna to compare with what you have now, to see if height is all that's holding you back. Hopefully when all the locals that will have DTV signals get them together in full, you'll have a better handle on your situation.

Wish I could be more help.

stdjsb25, a bit off-topic, but I'm in suburban Dallas (Garland) and there is a world of difference between any indoor antenna and a directional antenna outdoors, esp. with the OTA-DT's ;) Get yerself something outside and I bet you pull 'em in! :)

I'm trying to remember the FCC deadline for having a DTV signal at full strength? Isn't it July, or later this year?

Any idea on the possible penalties that KETK may face if they fail to meet this deadline?

I'm surprised that they aren't facing a license renewal challenge already this year because of their lack of DTV progress.
