DTV Rip Off ads....

I can't believe what I heard on the radio today, I heard a commercial for a local TV store, saying that they have all you need for the DTV transition. They said we have lowered our prices for LCD and Plasma TVs just in time for Feb 17 and that you need a new TV. I cannot believe they said you need to update your whole TV and buy a new $1000 TV when all you need is the digital conversion box. They are trying to rip people off that do not know a lot about the switch. Has anyone else heard any other advertisements that are trying to rip people off? Is there anything that can be done so innocent people do not get ripped off?

I have heard that some newspapers carried full-page ads that promoted free digital boxes, with no vouchers required. The fine print would later go on to say that you are required to purchase a "service plan" for $70, or something. Even without the voucher, you can buy your own box for as little as $40.

Wow seems pretty sneaky. Are you sure they said that? Maybe the snuck a quick fast bit about "you can get a coverter box or" but said it really fast or something so it get's lost. Or something like that?

You can contact your local Better Business Bureau and/or your local newspaper or TV consumer investigative reporter.

The phone number for the DTV converter voucher is 1-888-DTV-2009. However, if you replace the 888 with 800, you get a satellite tv pitch, but construed to help you with "the transition".

Relatively easy mistake for particularly older people, who don't have internet access to key in 800 instead of 888.
