The Feb 17 date of the DTV transition is being well promoted. One thing I have never heard is why a Tuesday in the middle of the month. Doe this date have some particular significance. It just doesn't seem very logical.
It was a compromise between December 31 and April 15, dates proposed by the House and Senate (I forget which proposed which). It falls after the Super Bowl and as previously stated, is the next business day after the Daytona 500.
Ideally, September 1 would have made more sense (easier to do tower work in the summer than the dead of winter) but that's Congress for you.
Here's the really odd thing that will happen: the traditional February "sweeps" ratings period has been moved to March next year.
They didn't want to have all the confusion of the DTV switch right in the middle of a ratings book. That seems fair to me since they want an accurate representation of viewership for sweeps. By the time March rolls around one would hope viewing patterns would have settled down.
