DTV Transition in Memphis

Count on there being some sort of compromise on another random date that makes no sense.

I don't think changing the end date of the extension is going to get it passed. Those who were opposed were opposed to any extension and extending it only until, say, early May I don't think would change their votes.

In many markets it will be a moot point. Here in Nashville channels 4, 5, 8, 17, 30, and 58 have already filed notice of intent to sign their analogs off on 2/17 even if an extension is passed & signed. Likewise in New Orleans channels 6, 8, 12, 20, 32, and 38. And in Wichita channels 3, 8, 10, 12, and 33. Among others.

In Memphis WMC is the only station to file such notice so far.

I still can't get Nashville channel 5 (or 8 either, for that matter) on my digital box. Have they not turned their digital signals ON yet? ???

They've both been on for years. Channel 8 is on reduced power - I get them up here (Cheatham Co.) on the STB and the DVR but not on the less-sensitive tuner in the TV itself.

Both stations are changing frequency (moving to their existing VHF frequencies) in February. For channel 8 that should include a "virtual power increase".

(their power is actually dropping, but because of the lower frequency it will cover better than their existing UHF facility)

I'm in Cheatham County, too (Pegram). But I can't get 5 worth a damn, and I've never been able to get 8. 5 came in just fine without the box, but I'm not going to disconnect it every time I want to watch 5!

I'm at the other end, in Pleasant View. I would guess the low power explains your issues with channel 8.

Again, both stations are changing frequency in a few weeks. So you need to rescan on the 18th - and there's a good chance you'll get both 5 and 8.

(and now that we've hijacked the Memphis board to discuss Nashville ;) -- Memphians (sp?) will also need to rescan on the morning of the 18th as you also have at least two stations changing frequency.)

Hey, until there's a TV-Info.com this remains a great place to get technical info on TV stations out there. :D

For the stations that are moving to a new channel, are they really doing it the day after the analog shutdown? Or are they all waiting on new equipment?

For now, yes. Presuming 2/17 sticks as the deadline (which it almost certainly won't) those stations that are moving to a new channel will do so right after midnight on the 17th.

One would hope they have all already built their facility on the new channel & tested it. I know channel 5 here in Nashville has, as some locals over on avsforum have caught their analog off -- and their channel 5 digital operating -- early in the morning at least twice. Any station that's waiting on new equipment is going to find itself off the air for a few weeks...

That said, there *are* provisions for stations to remain on their interim (old) digital channels for awhile after the transition while building out their permanent channel. VERY few stations have taken advantage of it. (quite a few can't, as remaining on their interim channel would delay someone else's changeover)

What the DTV Delay Act will do to this I suppose will depend on the market as well.
