DTV Virtual Channel Question

nd2023

Banned
What will happen if there's a tropo opening, and you get 2 TV stations from 2 different markets, the real channels are different but they both use the same virtual channel.

Any time you get a completely new channel, you'll have to let your box or DTV set update. The PSIP information, with it's channel allocation tables, programming tables, etc will have to be in there for it to decode that particular station.

Some sets do this without rescanning, some need an updated scan, some need to completely re-scan.

I've heard that TV DXers liked the Zenith DTT901 (which may be unavailable...I don't see it listed at Solid Signal) because you could just enter the RF channel number directly, and it would scan that particular channel for new PSIP.

It depends on the firmware in your TV/converter box.

In my experience, most boxes will receive both stations and you'll have two copies of the same channel. You might have two 8-1's, one being WNPT-HD and the other WSIU-DT - punching in 8-1 on the remote will bring in the one on the lowest real channel, and you hit the "channel-up" button to get the other one.

I suppose it's possible with some TVs/converter boxes, the one that scans in last is the only one you'll get - it will overwrite the other one.
