DTV weather Radar question

I always wondered why on the all weather radar channel do they show a few shows on it and not radar? I noticed on 5.2 (KENS) They showed a few hours of programming. I thought it was 24/7 radar?

All of the digital channels are required to run 3 hours a week of Educational (E/I) programming. Perhaps that's what you're seeing.

I think that is what it is, I dont understand why they require that? That doesnt make sence for a all radar channel to play that.

It's especially annoying when a storm is blowing through right in the middle of the E/I time slot and you can't see the radar.

Why do digital channels need to do that? I dont understand a kid isnt going to turn to the weather channel for that. They have other channels to turn to for that. The weather should be all weather nothing more.

The FCC decided that all subchannels must provide programming tailored to children and, based on the number of hours a subchannel broadcasts programming weekly, they must set aside a proportional amount for E/I. Doesn't make much sense to me either.

To me that is very stupid, I dont get it, if bad weather is around while the E/I network is going on, then that will be pretty bad. I do have broadband but I cut off everything when bad weather is around. I dont understand that. It needs to change.

The least they could do is stop the E/I program, switch to the radar, and air the program at a later time once the storm passes and the radar is clear.

Wasn't the E/I requirement imposed by Congress? (and implemented by the FCC)

Sometimes, stupid FCC rules are someone else's fault :)

You are correct, of course. The FCC merely enforces the rule that Congress passed. To paraphrase Limbaugh, you always want to pay attention when government takes action "for the children". The result is usually expensive for the adults, and rarely does the children much good.

Blame Action for Childrens Television for this case of stupidity.

Isnt that what PBS is for? Not a Radar sweep channel.

On a footnote thats really the only reason why I got a DTV converter box was to have a 24/7 local weather channel. The thing I dont like about the weather channel on DirectTV it doesnt show the local forecast or radar. Thats about all I watch on regular TV now days is the news and weather.

Can broadcasters run E/I programming at 3am? Nice signature by the way.

That is very stupid that they half to play the E/I programming. As for what I think, a weather channel should be 24/7 weather, local radar, none other.

I'm not familiar with what the time limits are exactly, but E/I programming has to air during time when children would be expected to be awake.

Thats crazy. If a kid needs childrens programming, they should turn to the main channel. Not the subchannel that has radar. Anyway I know I could look at radar on the computer when that is going on, but still I think that is stupid and crazy that its required to do that for a weather radar channel.
Oh well...
