I live in Portland, Oregon (clear over on the other side of the country) but I have been pulling in the Evergreen Radio Reading Service on the 67kHz SCA of both KUOW in Seattle, Wash. (K-University Of Washington, ERRS' "home carrier" 94.9, would otherwise be shielded by a rock/pop station in Portland on 94.7) and KPBX (91.1) from Spokane, Wash. sporadically today. Receivers: Okano 112D and Sony ICF-36 with Elf2A SCA demodulator attached.
Both signals (SCA and main carrier, incidentally) are kind of scratchy, SCA being no exception, but at least they are there and are identifiable!
What amazes me about the Spokane ERRS SCA is not only is Spokane about 200 miles away from Portland, but it is also shielded from us (as we are also shielded from them) by several miles of rugged, Cascade-mountain terrain. Add to that the fact that most of the mountain range is so high in elevation it even blocks weather from reaching eastern Washington and Oregon that blows in off the coast. Not entirely the ideal conditions for FM DXing in most circumstances.
But I think I am going to have to write that up in my log book! (I have never kept a log before so this would be a first.)
Anyone else do SCA DXing?
