I was just reading about the history of Jack FM...one of the best types of stations...it is awesome to note that the guy behind the creation of this format worked at WRSC for a time. I did some more checking...according to 440int.com, it was in 1982. Bob has a computer company in NY and started the first Jack fm online (jack.fm) in 2000.

More interesting to me is the fact that this guy launched the whole "on-air tailgate" deal we all have come to know and love every Penn State Game. Kinda interesting to me though that the article essentially starts off saying he always wanted to be coming "from your speakers", yet he poineered a format that runs essentially Jockless? Interesting.

But nice to see another "local type" who made it big.
Thanks for posting the article.

Very interesting article.

I wonder if he dresses like that all of the time? You don't see too many guys wearing a bandana and carrying a lasso and rifle in most workplaces.

Spackler--
Yes. You are right!
Is he a radio clown or a rodeo clown?
It is so hard to tell!

The clowns are the penguins that bought into the format.

Gee, thanks for noticing guys! Of course, I don't think the article mentions that the first time we did the big show, it was for the Kickoff Classic with the Lions playing the Cornhuskers. Being from Lincoln, I wore a NEBRASKA t-shirt to produce the show. (Figured I'd get a rise out of the owner - Bob Zimmerman). However, halfway into the game, Tina Hay, our sports director calls in to say that she needs another mic in the locker room. I was the only one not doing something at the time, so I hopped in my Nittany Blue WRSC Toyota truck and headed down to Beaver Stadium the back way. I realized what I was wearing sort of clashed with the color of the truck and stopped to flip it inside out before pulling into JOEPA land.

As to the "jockless" JACK-FMs, many JACKs do have jocks. We didn't have them originally on the prototype because it was just that. We figured we would have jocks. The folks that bought into the format found that most listeners like it just fine as is. Go figure!
